The Boy Who Called the Servant His Real Mother

The grand ballroom of the Sterling mansion was filled with crystal chandeliers, expensive champagne, and the city’s wealthiest families. Julian Sterling stood near the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, holding a glass of scotch and smiling at the crowd. Today was his engagement party, a celebration of his upcoming marriage to Evelyn, a woman from one of the most prominent high-society families in the state. Everything about the afternoon had been planned down to the second, designed to show off the Sterling family's massive estate and untarnished reputation.

Among the guests was Julian’s seven-year-old son, Leo. The boy wore a custom beige suit, looking like a miniature version of his father. However, while the guests laughed and raised their glasses, Leo stood alone near the center of the hall, staring at the floor. His eyes were red, and small tears rolled down his pale cheeks. He looked completely out of place in the middle of all the wealth and laughter.

Three wealthy women dressed in sparkly silk gowns noticed the young boy standing alone. They smiled sweetly and crouched down, attempting to comfort him in front of the surrounding crowd. They thought it was just a simple moment of childhood sadness, but they had no idea what was about to unfold.

Evelyn: Come here, darling! Why are you crying on such a happy day?

Leo: I... I want to go home.

Evelyn: Oh, sweetie, this is your home now! Look at all these beautiful flowers and delicious treats. Smile for everyone!

Julian: Leo, stop causing a scene. Stand up straight and wipe your face right now.

Leo: No! You're lying! You're all lying to me!

Julian: That is enough, Leo. Go to your room if you cannot act properly in front of our guests.

Leo sobbed heavily, his chest heaving as tears streamed down his cheeks. He took a step back from the wealthy women, looking around the room at all the unfamiliar, cold faces staring at him. Suddenly, he turned around and sprinted across the polished marble floor, heading toward the back double doors of the ballroom.

Near the rear exit stood Maria, a quiet woman in a simple black dress and a white apron. She was holding a heavy silver platter filled with water glasses, standing silently as she had done for years. Leo ran straight toward her, payed no attention to the grand double doors, and buried his face directly into her apron.

The silver platter slipped from Maria's fingers, crashing onto the hard marble floor with a loud metallic clatter. Water splashed everywhere, soaking the hem of her uniform. She immediately dropped to her knees, wrapping her arms tightly around the trembling boy and pulling him close.

Leo: This is wrong, Mommy! Don't let him do this!

A collective gasp echoed across the grand mansion hall. Julian froze near the window, his smile instantly disappearing as his face turned pale. The guests stared in complete silence as the heir to the Sterling estate wept in the arms of a humble house maid, calling her the one name no one expected to hear.
