Evelyn rushed around the mess of broken glass on the floor, stepping in front of the doorway to block David’s exit. Her eyes were wild with anger and panic.
Evelyn: You cannot take her! That is kidnapping! I am her biological mother, and you have no legal right to step foot out of this house with her!
David: Try and stop me, Evelyn. Go ahead, physically stand in my way.
Evelyn: Mark! Stand up and stop him! He’s taking our daughter!
Mark stood up slowly, looking at the floor covered in gravy and turkey, then looking at his wife’s furious, unyielding face. He turned his eyes toward David and the quiet, terrified little girl clinging to his chest.
Mark: Let him go, Evelyn.
Evelyn: What?! Are you insane? He is walking out with our child!
Mark: Look at her, Evelyn! She’s terrified of you! Look at what we’re doing over a stupid dinner and a country club photo!
Evelyn: I am doing what is best for her future! She needs to learn self-control early!
Mark: She is three years old! She needed bread, and you treated her like a dog begging at the table! I’m sick of this. I’m sick of pretending this is normal!
Evelyn: If you let him walk out that door, Mark, I will file for divorce tomorrow morning! I will take every cent of your family inheritance!
Mark: Take it. File the papers. I don't care anymore.
Mark walked over to David, reaching out to gently pat Mia’s back. The little girl reached her small hand out and touched her father’s thumb. Mark’s eyes welled with tears as he looked at David.
Mark: Take her to your house, David. Feed her a proper meal. I’ll pack her bags and bring her clothes over in an hour.
David: You’re making the right choice, Mark. For once in your life, you’re actually protecting her.
Evelyn: You traitor! Both of you! You’re destroying this family over a piece of bread!
David: It was never about the bread, Evelyn. It was about you caring more about status than your own blood.
David adjusted Mia in his arms, stepping around Evelyn as she screamed demands and threats behind them. He walked out of the formal dining room, down the long entryway, and pushed open the front door into the crisp, cool autumn air.
Mia: Uncle Dave... where we going?
David: We’re going to my house, sweetie. Where you can eat as much bread, turkey, and ice cream as you want.
Mia: Real food?
David: Real food, little one. As much as your heart desires.
