Cornered in the Cellar

The Broken Glass and the Secret Inside the Button

Arthur Vance: Keep moving down the stairs! The wine cellar door is right at the bottom!

Maya: I’ll hold the door latch from the inside while you unlock the iron gate!

Julian: You can't outrun me in your own house, Arthur! Give me the signed transfer papers for the estate holding company, and I'll let you walk away with the boy!

Arthur Vance: You're delusional, Julian! You think forcing me to sign documents at gunpoint will hold up in court?

Julian: It won't have to! Once you sign, my offshore accounts receive the wire transfers immediately. By the time police investigate, I'll be on a private flight to South America!

Maya: Mr. Vance, the lock on this iron gate is rusted shut! It won't turn!

Arthur Vance: Let me try! The key must be stuck in the humidity!

Arthur grabbed the heavy iron ring key, putting all his weight into turning the lock, but the ancient mechanism groaned and snapped in half, leaving the broken tip wedged inside the keyhole.

Noah: Dad! The key broke!

Arthur Vance: No... no, no, no! This can't be happening!

Julian: Well, well, well. Looks like your grand escape route came to a sudden dead end.

Julian stepped into the damp brick wine cellar, holding a silver handgun low at his side. His two guards stood right behind him, blocking the narrow staircase leading back up to the house.

Julian: Throw your phone on the ground, Arthur. Both of you, hands where I can see them.

Maya: Leave the boy out of this, Julian. He has nothing to do with your financial failures.

Julian: Be quiet, maid! You've ruined enough of my plans tonight. If you had just let that glass tower drop, Arthur would be at the hospital right now, and I would have had full control of the estate assets by midnight!

Arthur Vance: What do you want, Julian? Name your price. Just let Maya and Noah step outside.

Julian: I want everything you took from me fifteen years ago! The mansion, the family trust fund, the seats on the corporate board!

Arthur Vance: You lost those things because you were unstable and greedy! Catherine left you because you were drain on her life!

Julian: LIAR! She loved me!

Maya: If she loved you, why did she hide her real personal diary inside the lining of her jewelry box? The box that was donated to the city museum last year?

Julian: What are you talking about? What diary?

Maya: I worked as a night cleaner at the Chicago History Museum before taking this catering gig. I saw the Vance collection donation. Catherine wrote everything down, Julian. She wrote about the threats, the stolen funds, and how you tried to forge her signature on her medical proxy forms!

Julian: You're lying! She would never write those things down!

Maya: Check the gold button in Mr. Vance's pocket! The hidden latch doesn't just hold a photo. It holds the micro-engraved serial number of her original safety deposit box!
