The white marble floor of the grand estate sparkled under the crystal chandeliers as dozens of wealthy guests laughed and clinked their glasses. High-end caterers moved through the crowd, carrying trays of expensive appetizers, while a massive pyramid of champagne glasses stood in the center of the grand hall. Maya tightened her apron and wiped down a nearby table, keeping her head low. She was just a hired maid for the evening, paid to clean up after people who barely acknowledged her existence.
Suddenly, out of the corner of her eye, Maya noticed a small four-year-old boy named Noah running wildly past the displays. His father, a powerful billionaire CEO named Arthur Sterling, was busy talking business with a group of investors near the back of the room. Noah was chasing a toy car, totally unaware that he was heading straight for the massive glass tower.
Maya: Noah, stop! Stand still!
Her heart stopped as she saw a dark figure in the crowd extend a hand and deliberately shove the heavy wooden table holding the champagne pyramid. The entire glass structure tilted, heading straight for the little boy. Without thinking twice, Maya lunged forward, diving across the polished marble floor.
Maya: NOAH!
She pulled the boy into her arms and twisted her body to shield him just as hundreds of heavy glass champagne flutes came crashing down in a deafening explosion of shattering glass. Champagne soaked through her uniform, and sharp shards grazed her shoulders, but she held the child tightly against her chest. Noah sobbed softly, completely unhurt in her arms.
Noah: Mommy... I'm scared!
Maya: Shh, it’s okay, little guy. You’re safe. I’ve got you.
Heavy, angry footsteps echoed across the hall as the music suddenly stopped. Arthur Sterling pushed through the shocked crowd, his eyes wide with rage as he saw his son surrounded by broken glass and a soaked maid. Before Maya could even stand up or explain what happened, Arthur snatched his son away from her arms with a furious glare.
Arthur: GET AWAY FROM MY SON!
Maya: Sir, please listen to me—
Arthur: You clumsy fool! Look at what you did! You almost killed him!
Noah: Dad, no! She saved me! That man pushed it!
Arthur ignored his son’s cries, calling for security to throw Maya out onto the street. But as Maya pushed herself up from the sharp pile of glass, her fingers brushed against a heavy, cold metallic object buried beneath the broken stemware. It was a custom gold coat button with a hidden latch, and what lay inside would shatter Arthur Sterling's world forever...
