The afternoon sun was dipping below the rolling green hills outside Austin Memorial Hospital when Vince's private car pulled up to the emergency entrance.
Chloe: Is that the building, Daddy? Is Mommy on the third floor?
Vince: Third floor, room three-fourteen. Grab my hand, Chloe.
They stepped through the sliding glass doors, walking briskly down the quiet tiled corridors where nurses offered gentle, knowing smiles.
At the end of the hall stood Marcus, wearing his dark federal prosecutor's suit with his badge clipped to his belt.
Marcus: Vince. She's awake.
Vince: How is she doing, Marcus? Tell me the truth.
Marcus: Bruised, exhausted, but the doctors say there's no permanent organ damage. The caretaker Victoria hired got terrified of a murder rap and kept her fed and hydrated.
Vince: Where is the caretaker now?
Marcus: In federal custody. He's already signed a full confession implicating Victoria and her father in the entire wire fraud scheme. They won't see daylight for thirty years.
Marcus bent down on one knee, gently tapping Chloe's shoulder.
Marcus: You're the bravest little girl in the entire state of Texas, you know that?
Chloe: I just wanted Mommy back for my birthday.
Marcus: Go on in, sweetheart. She's waiting for you.
Chloe pushed open the heavy wooden door to room three-fourteen, her sneakers squeaking softly on the linoleum.
Sitting up against white pillows, hooked up to an IV line but smiling with overflowing tears, was Clara.
Clara: Chloe... my beautiful baby girl.
Chloe: Mommy!
Chloe sprinted across the room, climbing carefully onto the edge of the mattress and throwing her arms around Clara's neck.
Clara: Oh, look at you... you got so tall this year. Look at those freckles.
Chloe: I kept the phone hidden in my stuffed bear, Mommy! Just like you told me before you drove away that night!
Clara: You saved my life, darling. You saved both of us.
Vince stepped slowly into the room, his eyes brimming with tears as he reached out and took Clara's thin, trembling hand in his.
Vince: I am so sorry, Clara. I should have looked deeper. I should have never believed that river report.
Clara: You didn't know, Vince. Victoria had doctors and corrupt divers on her payroll. But our daughter knew.
Vince: I threw Victoria out of our lives forever. The company is safe, the trust fund is restored, and nobody will ever separate us again.
Clara reached up, touching Vince's cheek with her thumb, feeling the wet trail of tears that had finally broken through his strong exterior.
Clara: Take us home, Vince.
Vince: First thing tomorrow morning, my love. We're going home together.
