Elena turned toward the double mahogany doors, her heels clicking sharp against the marble tile.
Julian: Elena! Don't leave like this! The reporters are already outside the hotel gates!
Elena: Tell them whatever lie keeps your pride intact, Julian.
Julian: I won't let you ruin my life over a stupid misunderstanding!
Julian rushed forward, grabbing her elbow with a desperate grip.
Elena: Take your hand off me before I call security.
Julian: You can't just drop a bomb on our family and walk away clean!
Elena: You brought the bomb to dinner, Julian. I just handed you the detonator.
Victoria strode over, her face pale beneath her heavy makeup, holding her phone to her ear.
Victoria: Marcus? Marcus, pick up the phone this instant! Why is the registrar's office locked down?
The muffled voice of the family attorney came through the speaker, cold and formal.
Attorney Vance: Victoria, you were advised not to alter the premarital conditions without my presence.
Victoria: Did Elena file Arthur’s secret codicil?
Attorney Vance: She didn't file it, Victoria. Arthur filed it three years ago, before he even met Elena.
Julian stared at the phone as if it had struck him across the face.
Julian: Three years ago? Dad planned this before I even met her?
Attorney Vance: Your father knew your mother’s habits, Julian. He knew she would try to use family trusts to control any future grandchildren.
Victoria: Marcus, this is outrageous! I pay your firm an annual retainer of four hundred thousand dollars!
Attorney Vance: Not anymore, Victoria. As executor of Arthur’s estate, my duty is strictly to the trust terms.
The call went dead with a dull electronic beep.
Elena: Your husband knew you better than you thought, Victoria.
Victoria: You orchestrated this whole setup from the beginning, didn't you?
Elena: I came here tonight ready to be your daughter-in-law. I wore the dress you picked out. I invited my mother and father to celebrate.
A lone tear slipped down Elena’s cheek, but her voice never wavered.
Elena: You were the ones who decided that power mattered more than family.
Julian: Elena, please... I’ll give up the trust fund. I’ll walk away from my mother’s money right now.
Elena: No, you won't, Julian. You don't know who you are without your father's surname.
