Elena walked down the center aisle of the chapel, her head held high as whispers turned into a deafening roar of confusion.
Julian raced after her down the carpeted runner, his tie crooked and his face flushed with humiliating defeat.
Julian: Elena! Stop! Don't do this in front of the mayor and our business partners!
Elena paused at the mahogany exit doors and turned to face the crowd of three hundred socialites.
Elena: Anyone who contributed to the Sterling commercial investment pool should call their personal brokers immediately.
A distinguished older gentleman in the second row stood up, his face dark with fury.
Investor: Julian, what is the meaning of this? Is there a problem with the land acquisition bonds?
Julian: No! Mr. Harris, please, it’s just a misunderstanding with the family trust documents!
Marcus: It’s not a misunderstanding, Mr. Harris. The Sterling Group does not own the necessary parcels for commercial construction.
Victoria ran into the sanctuary, her heels clicking loudly on the wood floor as she tried to shout over the commotion.
Victoria: Sit down, everyone! The luncheon will proceed in the garden courtyard! Julian, escort your bride to the front!
Elena pushed through the heavy exit doors into the bright, clean afternoon sunshine outside.
The cool Ohio breeze caught her hair as she walked past the rows of luxury sedans lined along the driveway.
Marcus caught up to her near the valet stand, holding the keys to her modest used sedan.
Marcus: Your car is parked right around the corner, Elena. Are you going to be okay?
Elena: I haven't breathed this easily since the day my dad went into the hospital, Marcus.
Marcus: The county court will finalize the protective order on the workshop property by tomorrow morning.
Elena: And what happens to the land now?
Marcus: Your father designated the entire five-acre parcel as a permanent community nature preserve in his will.
Elena felt tears finally spill down her cheeks, but this time they were tears of overwhelming relief.
Elena: He really thought of everything, didn't he?
Marcus: He loved you more than anything in this world, Elena. He was never going to let predators steal your peace.
Behind them, the front doors of the country club burst open as dozens of guests began streaming out toward their vehicles.
Several men were on their phones shouting at their investment managers, while Victoria Sterling stood on the steps screaming at the valet attendants.
Julian ran toward the gravel path, waving his hands frantically as Elena opened the driver's door of her car.
Julian: Elena! Wait! Just five minutes! We can make this right!
Elena paused with her hand on the steering wheel, looking at the man she thought she was going to spend her life with.
Elena: Goodbye, Julian. Good luck with the lenders on Monday morning.
She climbed inside, turned the ignition, and pulled out of the country club driveway without looking back once in her rearview mirror.
The road ahead was open, quiet, and entirely her own.
