Seven year old Lily stood near the grand foyer entrance inside her huge Dallas house on a bright morning.
The white marble floor stretched across the massive foyer, shining under the giant crystal chandelier hanging from above.
A heavy framed American flag hung on the pristine white wall, adding a touch of quiet dignity to the space.
Lily wiped a tear off her freckled cheek, holding a heavy iron tool she found inside the nearby garage.
Her heart pounded fast because she heard faint muffled sounds coming from directly under the polished floorboards.
She dropped to her knees, staring down at a heavy wooden hatch hidden right beneath the fancy area rug.
A thick brass padlock held the hatch shut tight, looking cold and menacing in the warm house light.
Lily raised the heavy tool high above her head with both of her small trembling hands.
She brought the iron tool down hard against the lock mechanism with a loud metallic crash that echoed everywhere.
Lily: I am coming, Mommy!
Sparkling bits of dust rose up into the clean air as the metal latch cracked completely wide open.
Lily pulled back the thick wooden hatch door, gasping as cold damp air rushed into her small face.
She leaned over the opening, peering into the dark subterranean space that sat below the floor.
Lily: Mommy! I am opening it right now!
A pale face looked upward from the darkness beneath the marble floor, filled with sudden hopeful relief.
It was Sarah, her biological mother who had vanished three long days ago without leaving any single trace.
Sarah: Help me, please! Get me out of here!
Sarah reached her dirty hands upward toward the bright light of the home foyer above her head.
Lily reached down as far as her small arms could go, trying hard to touch her mother fingers.
Suddenly, heavy footstep sounds echoed down the hallway behind the brave young girl.
Victoria, the new stepmother, stepped into the room while wearing an expensive dark designer dress.
Victoria: Do not touch that hatch!
Victoria pointed her finger straight at Lily while her eyes flared with extreme panic and deep rage.
The elegant woman marched forward fast, trying to push the little girl away from the open hatch cover.
Lily screamed out loudly for her father, standing her ground right beside the dark floor opening.
The front door opened wide as Mark walked into the main hallway holding his work briefcase firmly.
He stopped dead in his tracks, staring at his screaming daughter and the open floor trapdoor.
