Little Maya stood on the wide stone steps of the grand estate, holding her breath tightly.
Cold tears ran down her freckled cheeks while her tiny hands trembled around a silver locket.
She had searched for her missing family for years after growing up in foster homes.
The old silver medallion in her hand was the only clue her late mother had left.
Suddenly, the massive front doors swung open and an elderly woman stepped outside into the light.
Evelyn Vance wore a tailored suit and glared down at the young girl with cold disgust.
Maya: Please, my mother said the other half was here!
Evelyn: Get away from my family, you little beggar!
Evelyn raised her voice in anger and stepped closer to the trembling girl on the stairs.
Maya: I am not begging for money, I just want my family!
Evelyn: You are nothing but a street rat trying to claim our inheritance!
Evelyn reached out and shoved the young girl back toward the sharp concrete edge below.
Maya stumbled down three stone steps before a strong pair of arms caught her safely.
Ethan Vance stepped into the sunlight, his eyes wide with sharp anger as he held Maya.
Ethan: Don't you ever lay a hand on this child again!
Evelyn: Ethan, step away from that common thief right now!
Ethan ignored his mother and gently looked at the metal piece in Maya's shaking hand.
He pulled a matching silver medallion from under his dark black coat with a cold stare.
The two pieces clicked together with a smooth metallic sound right before Evelyn's pale face.
Ethan: This is my missing child and your own granddaughter!
Evelyn recoiled in sudden panic, her face turning completely white as she backed away slowly.
Evelyn: No, Ethan, listen to me, she is lying to you!
Ethan: My daughter was stolen ten years ago, and you knew it all along!
Ethan stared at his mother with utter betrayal burning deep inside his chest in that moment.
Ethan: You paid those people to hide her so you could control my estate!
Evelyn: Ethan, please show some mercy to your own mother!
Ethan: You threw away your own blood for wealth and power!
Ethan turned his back on the crying woman without showing an ounce of pity or warmth.
He carried Maya securely up the massive steps toward the bright glass doors of the mansion.
Ethan: You are going straight to federal prison for what you did!
Maya rested her small head on her father's shoulder as the heavy doors closed behind them.
