Mark: Hey, hand me that temperature gauge. Something is completely wrong with these readings.
Sarah: What do you mean wrong? We are thirty feet under a glacier in upstate New York, Mark. It is supposed to be freezing.
Mark: That is just it. The surface probe says minus ten, but this thermal scanner right here is reading over sixty degrees in that lower trench.
Sarah: Sixty degrees? That makes no sense at all. Ice does not stay solid at sixty degrees.
Mark: Look at the screen yourself if you do not believe me. The heat source is localized, right beneath this ledge.
Sarah strapped her heavy climbing gear tight and knelt beside the edge of the icy cavern wall. She adjusted her headlamp, letting the bright LED beam pierce the deep shadows below.
Sarah: Grab the rope. I am going down there to take a look.
Mark: Be careful. The structural integrity of this shelf looks unstable.
Sarah: I have been rappelling down ice caves for ten years, Mark. Just hold the anchor line.
She carefully slid down the frozen wall, her boots crunching against the hard frost. As she descended into the narrow fissure, the air grew noticeably milder. The sharp, biting cold began to fade, replaced by a strange, humid warmth.
Sarah: Mark, you are not going to believe this. The air temperature is rising as I get deeper.
Mark: Do you see thermal vents? Volcanic activity?
Sarah: No... no volcanic rock here. It is all blue glacial ice, but it is glowing. Hold on, my feet just hit solid ground.
She unclipped her harness and stepped forward into a massive sub-glacial chamber. The floor was lined with strange, metallic crystal structures that shone with a deep, pulsing radiance. In the center of the room lay a vast hollowed-out nest made of polished ice.
Sarah: What in the world... Mark, come down here right now. Bring the secondary cameras.
Mark: On my way down! What did you find?
Sarah: I do not know... it looks like some kind of natural sanctuary, but these marks on the floor... they look like giant claw scratches.
Mark: Claw scratches? Sarah, stay where you are. Do not touch anything.
Sarah took a cautious step closer to the center of the chamber. She reached out a gloved hand toward a cluster of giant smooth stones resting in the ice, each one nearly three feet tall and shimmering with a metallic blue hue.
Sarah: These are not stones, Mark. Look at the symmetry. Look at the outer surface patterns.
Mark: Are you telling me those are... eggs?
Sarah: Look at the heat readings on your scanner right now!
Mark: They are emitting thermal radiation! Whatever is inside them is alive!
Suddenly, a low, resonant rumble echoed through the massive cavern walls. The ground beneath their feet trembled slightly, sending fine snow dropping from the ceiling. A massive shadow slowly stretched across the blue ice floor, cast by a creature emerging from the dark back chamber.
Sarah: Mark... do not move a muscle.
Mark: Dear God... tell me I am dreaming.
Sarah: Keep your voice down! Do not startle it!
A massive crest of icy spines rose above the shadow as a magnificent mother dragon stepped into the light. Her scales shimmered like polished diamond, reflecting the ambient glow of the cave. Her sharp yellow eyes locked onto the two human intruders standing mere feet from her nest.
Mark: Sarah... we need to pull back to the rope immediately.
Sarah: No, wait! Look at her eyes... she is not attacking. She is protecting them.
Mother Dragon: Who enters my hall?
The voice echoed not through the air, but directly inside their minds—a deep, ancient, protective sound that made the air itself vibrate with power.
