Maria: "Oh God, please..."
Maria struggled to her feet, gasping for air as the sharp ache in her face radiated down her neck. She wiped a tear from her eye and adjusted her apron, trying to keep her balance. The sound of child harness straps jingling came from the patio glass doors.
Chloe: "Stop whimpering, Toby. You are so annoying, just like your mother was."
Toby: "Daddy... want Daddy..."
Chloe: "Your daddy isn't here to save you today. He's at a board meeting in Chicago, fixing the company estate. So you belong to me right now."
Maria walked cautiously toward the kitchen entrance overlooking the courtyard. Chloe had attached the toddler's harness to a heavy stone statue near the fountain, letting the little boy sit on the freezing concrete while she drank iced tea and scrolled through her phone. The boy tried to crawl toward a toy ball, but the short strap pulled him back instantly, making him fall flat on his face.
Maria: "Mrs. Vance, please let me take him inside. The wind is picking up, and his little hands are freezing."
Chloe: "Did I ask for your opinion, maid?"
Maria: "He has a fever, ma'am. I checked his temperature this morning. He needs his medicine and rest."
Chloe: "He is throwing a tantrum because he's spoiled. Arthur gives him everything—the trust fund, the custom nursery, the stock options. Do you know what my father gave me when I cried? A cold room and a locked door."
Maria: "Mr. Vance loves his son. If he sees those red marks on his chest from that harness, he will be heartbroken."
Chloe placed her glass down on the iron table with a loud clatter. She stood up slowly, her designer high heels clicking against the stone tiles as she approached Maria.
Chloe: "Arthur believes whatever I tell him. I told him you were getting careless, Maria. I told him you dropped a glass vase last week. Who do you think he trusts? His young wife or a hired servant?"
Maria: "I have taken care of this house for four years, Chloe. I nursed Arthur's late wife when she was dying of cancer. I promised her I would protect her boy."
Chloe: "Well, her time is up, and yours is running out fast."
Maria: "You are evil. Pure evil."
Chloe: "Call me whatever you want. But as long as Arthur’s wealth flows into our joint accounts, I rule this home. Now get back inside and finish polishing the silverware before I report you for theft."
Maria: "I won't let you hurt him anymore."
Chloe: "Try to stop me, and I will destroy your life."
Maria stood her ground, her fists clenched tightly at her sides. She looked down at Toby, who was reaching out his small arms through the bars of the patio railing, tears streaking his pale, shivering cheeks. Maria made a silent promise to herself right then. She would take whatever abuse Chloe threw at her, but she would never let this little boy suffer alone. Suddenly, the chime of the estate security gates echoed through the foyer intercom, catching Chloe completely off guard.
