Chapter 1 — The Afternoon Everything Changed:
Michael: “Emma, stay right there. Daddy is coming.”
The backyard had been filled with laughter only minutes earlier. Michael had invited his wife Sarah, their eight-year-old daughter Emma, and his wealthy sister Victoria for a quiet afternoon at the family estate.
Then Emma slipped near the pool.
Sarah: “Emma!”
Sarah rushed toward her daughter, but Emma was already on the ground, crying and holding her arm.
Michael: “What happened?”
Emma: “Mommy told me not to tell you.”
Michael looked at Sarah.
Michael: “Tell me what?”
Sarah's face went pale.
Sarah: “She is scared. She doesn't know what she's saying.”
Victoria suddenly stepped forward.
Victoria: “That's enough, Sarah.”
Michael turned toward his sister.
Michael: “Why are you getting involved?”
Victoria didn't answer.
Emma began crying harder.
Emma: “Grandpa said the house was supposed to be mine.”
Everyone went silent.
Michael stared at his daughter.
Michael: “What did Grandpa tell you?”
Emma pointed toward Sarah.
Emma: “Mommy found the papers.”
Michael's stomach dropped.
His father had died six months earlier, leaving behind a large estate, several properties, and a trust. Michael had been told that everything was divided fairly.
But apparently, someone had found something that had never been shown to him.
