David rushed through the dark, damp basement hallway, following the trembling sound of the voice he thought he had lost forever. The air smelled of mold, rust, and damp concrete. At the end of the narrow corridor stood a heavy wooden door secured with an iron deadbolt latch.
David: Stand back from the door, Clara! I'm breaking it down!
Clara: David, be careful! He has keys! Check his jacket!
David turned back toward the stairs, but Richard was already staggering down the concrete steps, holding a heavy wrench in his hand, his eyes bloodshot with desperate fury.
Richard: You're not taking her anywhere! You ruined me, David! I lost my house, my fortune, my inheritance! I spent four years in a federal cell because of your evidence!
David: You stole millions from innocent investors! You belonged in prison!
Richard: I was going to pay it back! But you had to be the honest corporate hero, didn't you? You called the feds! You signed the statement!
David: You put a mother and child in a basement! You're a monster, Richard!
Richard raised the wrench and lunged down the final steps. David braced himself, dodging to the left as the wrench smashed into the concrete wall, sending sparks flying into the dark air. David grabbed Richard's wrist, slamming it against the iron railing until the wrench dropped clattering to the floor.
David: It's over, Richard! The police are on their way right now!
Richard: I'm not going back to prison! Never!
With a desperate surge of strength, Richard shoved David backward into the wall. Richard turned and grabbed a metal padlock key from his pocket, throwing it wildly toward the dark furnace pit in the corner of the basement before turning to flee back up the stairs.
David: No!
David scrambled across the filthy floor, his fingers searching blindly through the black soot and coal dust near the old furnace. His hand brushed against a cold ring of metal. He grabbed the key ring just as heavy police sirens began to echo down the alleyway above.
Police Officer: Police! Stay where you are! Hands on your head!
Loud footsteps thundered down the alley steps as police officers tackled Richard to the ground right at the entrance. David ignored the noise above, turning back to the wooden door with the keys in his shaking hands.
David: I've got the key, Clara! Hang on!
Clara: Hurry, David! Please, hurry!
David slid the iron key into the deadbolt lock. The lock turned with a heavy, rusty click. He pulled the wooden door open, stepping into the small, dimly lit room.
Clara stood in the center of the room, wearing a faded coat, her body thin and frail. Tears streamed down her pale cheeks as she looked at David standing in the doorway. For three long years, she had survived in the dark, believing she might never see her husband again.
David: Clara... oh my God, Clara...
Clara: You found us, David. You actually found us.
