Six months later, the summer sun shone bright over the green lawn of David and Clara's home in the suburbs of Dallas. The dark memories of the icy alley and the damp basement were slowly fading, replaced by laughter and light. Clara sat on the back patio porch, her skin healthy and glowing again, watching Lily run through the lawn sprinklers.
David: What are you thinking about, sweetheart?
Clara: I was just thinking about how close I came to losing everything. If you hadn't stopped at that cafe that afternoon...
David: It wasn't chance, Clara. It was Lily. She saved all of us.
Clara: The prosecutor called this morning. Richard accepted a plea deal. Life in prison without the possibility of parole. He'll never be able to appeal.
David: Good. The court also finalized the restoration of your estate and life insurance trusts today. Everything is officially back in order.
Lily came running across the fresh grass, carrying a hand-picked bouquet of yellow dandelions from the yard. She bounded up the porch steps with a giant grin on her face, her shoes dripping with water from the lawn sprinkler.
Lily: Daddy! Look what I picked for you!
David: Wow, these are the most beautiful flowers in the whole world, Lily.
Lily: Are you going to give me fifty dollars for them like the first time?
Clara: Oh, so you're a real businesswoman now, huh?
David: I'll give you something much better than fifty dollars, sweetheart.
David lifted Lily up into his arms, spinning her around on the sunny porch while Clara laughed softly beside them. David held his family close, knowing that after years of darkness, injustice, and sorrow, they had finally brought their complete life back into the light.
Lily: What are you giving me, Daddy?
David: A home where you and Mummy will be safe forever.
