The Maid Interrupted Her Funeral With An Axe To Save Her

Three weeks later, the morning sun poured through the high arch windows of the Vance Manor estate. Evelyn sat in a soft velvet armchair in the living room, a warm plaid blanket wrapped around her legs. Though her voice was still quiet, the color had returned to her cheeks.

Evelyn: Please, come in, Clara. Sit down.

Clara stepped nervously into the room, wearing a neat navy blue dress instead of her prison uniform. All charges against her had been dropped by the district attorney two days after Julian's arrest.

Clara: Good morning, Mrs. Evelyn. You look so much better today.

Evelyn: Thanks to you, my dear. If you hadn't risked your own life and freedom, I wouldn't be sitting here breathing this air.

Marcus: The court finalized the asset seizure this morning, Evelyn. Julian's accounts have been frozen, and the mansion is completely back under your name.

Evelyn: Good. He will spend the rest of his miserable life behind bars where he belongs.

Evelyn picked up a thick white envelope from the side table and held it out toward Clara.

Clara: What is this, Mrs. Evelyn?

Evelyn: That is the deed to the guest cottage at the edge of the estate, along with a full trust fund set up in your name. You will never have to work as a maid again unless you want to.

Clara: I... I can't accept this, Mrs. Evelyn! It's too much!

Evelyn: You saved my life when my own husband tried to bury me alive for money. You took an axe to a casket just to give me a second chance at living. You deserve far more than a house.

Marcus: She's right, Clara. You're family now.

Clara took the envelope, her eyes filling with tears of gratitude as she wrapped her arms around Evelyn's shoulders. Outside the window, the birds sang sweet summer songs, and for the first time in years, the grand mansion felt like a real home filled with safety and truth.
