Mark: NO!
Duke leaped upward, meeting the mountain lion mid-air to intercept the terrifying strike. The two massive animals collided with a brutal thud, tumbling onto the dry autumn leaves just feet away from where Lily lay in the grass.
Officer Miller: Mark! Grab Lily NOW!
Mark lunged forward like a sprinter, scooping his two-year-old daughter into his arms and pulling her violently back toward his chest.
Lily: Daddy! The big kitty!
Mark: I've got you, baby! I've got you! Sarah, run to the car!
Sarah: What about the officer and the dog?! We can't just leave them!
Officer Miller: GO! GET HER TO SAFETY!
Officer Miller drew his service weapon, stepping between the fighting animals and the fleeing parents. Duke was biting aggressively at the big cat's shoulder, using all his tactical training to pin the wild predator against the trunk of an oak tree.
Officer Miller: Get off him, Duke! OUT!
The police K9 released his bite grip and rolled away instantly upon hearing the release command. The mountain lion turned its head toward Officer Miller, exposing long yellow fangs.
BANG! BANG! BANG!
Three rapid gunshots echoed through the park as Officer Miller discharged his sidearm. The mountain lion collapsed onto the grass, twitched once, and lay still. Smoke curled slowly from the barrel of the officer's weapon into the cold Texas air.
Officer Miller: Threat neutralized! Area clear!
Police cruisers slammed their brakes near the park pavilion, tires screeching against asphalt as three more Texas officers sprinted out with weapons drawn.
Officer Davis: Miller! Are you okay?! Is the child safe?
Officer Miller: Child is safe. Parents have her. Get EMS over here to check the baby for scrapes!
Mark stood near the park bench, holding Lily tight against his neck as his whole body trembled with adrenaline. Sarah wrapped her arms around both of them, tears flowing freely down her face.
Sarah: Is she hurt? Mark, check her body!
Mark: She's just scared, honey. Look at her, she doesn't have a scratch on her. That dog took the whole force of the fall.
Duke trotted slowly over to the family, his tail wagging low as he panted heavily from the intense physical exertion. He nudged his cold nose against Lily's tiny shoe.
Lily: Good doggy...
Mark: Officer... I don't even know what to say. I thought your dog was trying to kill my child. I was going to attack him.
Officer Miller: I know, sir. Any father would have done the exact same thing. Duke is trained to identify apex threats faster than human eyes can process them.
Sarah: He saved her life. If Duke hadn't tackled her... that mountain lion would have taken her into the brush.
Officer Miller: Yes, ma'am. He did his job today. But we have a bigger problem now.
Mark: What do you mean? The animal is dead.
Officer Miller: A wild mountain lion doesn't just wander into a suburban park with an expensive leather tracking collar around its neck. Someone illegally kept this animal nearby, and they let it loose.
