As the police officers led a screaming Victoria out to the squad car, the hallway fell into an uneasy calm. Red and blue emergency lights flashed through the tall windows, casting long shadows across the ruined wall.
Elena: Let me get him some fresh water and a clean towel, Mr. Vance.
Arthur: Thank you, Elena. Honestly... I don't even know how to begin repaying you for this.
Elena: You don't owe me anything, sir. I couldn't live with myself knowing what she was doing in this house.
Arthur guided Toby toward the living room sofa, holding his small hand tightly as if he might vanish again if he let go.
Arthur: Toby... how did you manage to get a recording device inside that room?
Toby: Mom gave me that little recorder key chain before she passed away... I kept it in my pocket. When Victoria shoved me in there, I kept it hidden under my shirt.
Arthur: You were so brave, son. So incredibly brave.
Elena returned with a warm cloth and a glass of juice, placing them gently on the coffee table beside the young boy.
Elena: She used to stand right by that wall section when she made her private calls, thinking no one could hear her over the home audio system.
Arthur: What did she say on those recordings, Toby?
Toby: She said... she said if she kept me locked up long enough, you would sign over the entire family estate to her because you were too depressed to care.
Arthur gritted his teeth, his jaw clenching as tears of guilt welled in his eyes. He wrapped his arm around his son's shoulders.
Arthur: I was so blinded by grief... I thought I lost you forever when she showed me those ashes and death certificates.
Elena: She paid off a crooked coroner at the private clinic, sir. I overheard her boasting about the wire transfer last week.
Arthur: A wire transfer from my company's payroll account... I assumed it was for her corporate charity gala.
Toby: She also said she was gonna sell the big house in Dallas and send me far away on a boat once the probate court closed the will.
Arthur: That will never happen. Not as long as I draw breath.
A detective walked into the living room, holding a small evidence bag containing the flash drive Toby had handed over.
Detective: Mr. Vance? I'm Detective Miller. We just plugged this drive into our mobile unit outside. You need to hear this.
Arthur: What's on it?
Detective: It's not just evidence of child abuse, Mr. Vance. It's a full confession of financial fraud and conspiracy to commit murder against you.
