Marcus: Sarah, what did you just say? You knew this was here?
Sarah: Marcus, please, just back away from the opening!
Lily: Daddy, I'm scared!
Marcus: Go to your room right now, Lily! Lock the door!
The little girl scrambled up the carpeted stairs, her fast footsteps echoing through the hallway. Marcus held the sledgehammer tightly, his knuckles white against the fiberglass handle. He looked back at the concealed steel frame embedded inside the drywall.
Marcus: Explain this to me right now. We bought this house five years ago!
Sarah: My family owned this property before the developers rebuilt it, Marcus!
Marcus: Your family? You told me you bought this house on the open market from a bank foreclosure!
Sarah: I lied! I had to buy it back so nobody else would discover what was beneath the floorboards!
Marcus: Are you out of your mind?! Who is behind that door?!
Sarah: NO! THEY'RE AWAKE!
The pale hand gripped the steel frame tighter. A rasping, ragged breath echoed from the darkness behind the gaping wall cavity. Marcus stepped back, pulling Sarah behind him despite his surging anger and betrayal.
Marcus: Who is in there, Sarah? Speak to me!
Sarah: My brother... Julian. The one I told you died ten years ago in Chicago.
Marcus: Julian? Your brother who disappeared during the trust fund lawsuit?
Sarah: He didn't disappear! My father locked him in the subterranean vault before the estate went into foreclosure!
Marcus: Your father locked his own son behind a reinforced wall?!
Sarah: Julian was dangerous, Marcus! He threatened to destroy the family inheritance, the whole life insurance policy, everything!
Marcus: So you left him to die inside a wall?!
Sarah: I didn't know he was still alive! I swear to God, Marcus, I thought he died years ago!
The heavy steel door swung open another inch with a horrific metallic screech that vibrated through the hardwood floors. Dusty air, smelling of rot and rust, poured out into the pristine Dallas living room. A hollow, raspy voice drifted out from the dark.
Voice: Sarah... sister... you brought a hammer...
Marcus: Jesus Christ...
Sarah: Julian... please stay back...
Voice: Ten years in the dark... while you lived in my house...
Marcus: This isn't just a family secret, Sarah. This is a crime scene!
Sarah: If you call the police, they will arrest me as an accessory to kidnapping and attempted murder!
Marcus: You kept a man trapped under our living room floor while our daughter played six feet away?!
Sarah: I was trying to protect our life! The money, the mortgage, the family line!
Marcus: You lied to me about everything!
Marcus grabbed his cell phone from the side table, his fingers shaking so badly he nearly dropped it onto the rug. He dialed three digits and pressed the speakerphone button.
911 Dispatcher: 911, what is your emergency?
Marcus: I need emergency services at 442 Elm Ridge Drive right now!
Sarah: Marcus, hangs up! You're going to ruin everything!
Marcus: There is a man trapped inside a concealed steel vault behind my living room wall!
911 Dispatcher: Sir, repeat that? A person is trapped inside a wall?
Marcus: Yes! Send police and paramedics immediately!
