Uncovering the Past

The Secret Hidden Inside a Maid's Gold Bracelet

Rafael: Look at me, Maya. Turn toward the light.

Maya: Sir? What is happening?

Victoria: Rafael, you are embarrassing yourself in front of the help! She is a maid!

Rafael: She has my sister's eyes. She has my father's chin.

Maya: I don't understand... my mother told me my father died in a construction accident before I was born.

Rafael: Your mother was told my father died. My father was told your mother ran away with family funds!

Victoria: That is ancient history, Rafael! None of this matters now!

Rafael: It matters because you were the estate manager back then, Victoria! You handled all of my father's personal correspondence before you married me!

Victoria: I did what was necessary to protect the Sterling estate from opportunists!

Maya: My mother wasn't an opportunist! She worked two jobs her entire life just to afford our tiny apartment!

Rafael: You lied to my father on his deathbed, didn't you, Victoria?

Victoria: He was sick! He wasn't thinking clearly! If he knew about a illegitimate child, he would have divided the entire trust fund!

Rafael: He wanted to find her! He searched for Eleanor for three years before his heart failed!

Victoria: And if he found her, everything we built would have been split in half! I saved this family business from being torn apart by a mistress!

Maya: She wasn't a mistress! They were legally married in secret! I have their birth certificates and marriage paper in my apartment safe!

Rafael: What did you just say?

Maya: My mother kept all their original documents. She told me if I ever got into deep trouble, I should look up the Sterling foundation, but I was too afraid of being turned away.

Victoria: Paperwork can be fabricated! Any lawyer can prove those documents invalid after twenty years!

Rafael: We'll let the family probate attorneys decide that, Victoria.

Maya: I never wanted your money, Mr. Sterling. I just applied for a job here because I wanted to see where my father lived.

Rafael: You don't have to explain yourself to anyone in this house, Maya. You are standing in your father's home.

Victoria: Rafael, you can't be serious! If the press gets hold of this, our corporate shares will plunge by morning!

Rafael: I care much more about the truth than our stock price right now.

Victoria: I am your wife! You take her side over mine?

Rafael: You hid my sister from me for twenty-two years!
