Clara leaned against the locked bathroom door, her breath coming in jagged, desperate gasps.
She opened her satin bridal handbag and pulled out her smartphone with trembling fingers.
She dialed the private cell number of Arthur Vance, her father’s lifelong attorney and personal business partner.
The phone rang three times before an older, gravelly voice answered.
Arthur: Clara? Kiddo, aren’t you supposed to be walking down the aisle in ten minutes?
Clara: Uncle Arthur, help me! Victoria and Julian just cornered me in the bridal suite with an addendum!
Arthur: What kind of addendum? Clara, speak slowly.
Clara: They bought Mom's healthcare center and are demanding I sign over Dad's harbor shipping terminal right now!
Arthur: The harbor parcel? Did they specifically name Terminal Nine?
Clara: Yes! They said if I don't sign the quitclaim deed, they are evicting Mom onto the street by five o’clock!
A loud thump echoed over the line as Arthur slammed his hand against a wooden desk.
Arthur: The arrogant, reckless thieves! Do not put your signature on that paper, Clara! Not even an initial!
Clara: Julian said they will cancel the wedding and sue my mother’s estate for the reception costs!
Arthur: They can't sue you for a single brass cent, Clara. Listen to me very carefully.
Clara: How? Victoria said their lawyers drew up ironclad foreclosure liens!
Arthur: Victoria’s corporate flunkies pulled the outdated city registry deed from fifteen years ago.
Clara: What do you mean outdated?
Arthur: Three weeks before your father died, he transferred Terminal Nine into the James Ross Maritime Preservation Trust.
Clara: An irrevocable trust?
Arthur: An irrevocable federal trust, Clara. It is registered directly under the United States Department of Transportation.
Clara clutched the marble counter, feeling the first surge of steady ground beneath her feet.
Clara: So I don't even own the property in my personal name?
Arthur: You are merely the named co-fiduciary trustee alongside the federal port authority.
Clara: If I sign a quitclaim deed as an individual, does it transfer anything?
Arthur: Not only is it legally void, but attempting to transfer protected federal deep-water port land without federal maritime consent is a class-A felony.
A heavy fist banged against the bathroom door, rattling the brass frame violently.
Julian: Clara! Time is up! Mom is bringing the notary inside right now!
Clara: Just touching up my mascara, Julian! One second!
She brought the phone back against her ear, whispering frantically.
Clara: Arthur, what about Mom's care facility? Can they evict her tonight?
Arthur: Your father was a decorated navy commander, Clara. The Shady Pines acquisition violates the Veterans Safe Haven Harbor Act.
Clara: Can they touch her?
Arthur: If they try to move a single medical monitor from her suite, federal marshals will arrest the facility director on the spot.
Clara: Where are you right now, Uncle Arthur?
Arthur: I am sitting in my patrol vehicle outside the Sterling country club gates with the federal regional director.
Clara: Drive through the gates right now, Arthur.
Arthur: Keep your head high, kiddo. We’re coming straight to the chapel.
Clara washed her hands in cold water, dried them carefully, and looked straight into her own eyes in the mirror.
She unbolted the door and walked out into the dressing lounge, her face set in stone.
