Clara backed away from the vanity until her shoulder blades hit the tall mahogany wardrobe.
Clara: How could you even threaten my mother like that, Julian?
Julian: I am not threatening anybody, Clara. I am stating a plain financial reality.
Clara: My mother is bedridden with pulmonary fibrosis! She requires specialized round-the-clock nursing care!
Victoria: Which costs eighteen thousand dollars every calendar month, Clara.
Clara: My father’s commercial warehouse lease covers every single cent of that bill!
Victoria: Not anymore, dear.
Victoria pulled a crisp certified notice from the side pocket of her leather portfolio.
Victoria: Sterling Capital acquired the parent holding entity of Shady Pines Healthcare yesterday morning.
Clara felt the floor tilt beneath her white satin pumps as the room grew suffocatingly narrow.
Clara: You bought my mother's private care facility?
Victoria: We acquire commercial healthcare assets across the tri-state area constantly. It is simply good business.
Clara: You targeted her hospice home just to back me into a corner on my wedding day!
Julian: Mom is giving you a massive gift, Clara. If you sign over the harbor land, Shady Pines waives your mother’s monthly fees for life.
Clara: And if I refuse to sign?
Victoria: An immediate thirty-day notice of emergency transfer to the county charity ward will be executed at five o’clock sharp.
Clara: Julian, speak up! You promised me we were partners! You promised me you loved me!
Julian adjusted his silk tie in the mirror, his expression completely blank and detached.
Julian: Love doesn't secure municipal development permits, Clara. That harbor terminal is the linchpin for our downtown container corridor.
Clara: So our entire relationship was just a corporate acquisition to you?
Julian: Don't flatter yourself with melodrama. We liked each other, but family legacy always comes first.
Victoria: Here is the pen, Clara. The county notary is waiting in the corridor outside.
Clara: What happens to the secondary clause regarding legal conservatorship?
Victoria tapped a long, painted fingernail against the bottom margin of page nine.
Victoria: As the corporate owner of the care facility, Sterling Capital will assume healthcare power of attorney over your mother.
Clara: You want total control over her medical treatments?
Victoria: We cannot have unpredictable outside executors disputing terminal asset allocations.
Clara: You want to pull her ventilator the second you secure the harbor title!
Julian stepped forward, grabbing Clara’s wrist with a tight, punishing grip.
Julian: Lower your voice right now! My father’s major investment partners are seated in the courtyard!
Clara: Let go of my arm, Julian!
Julian: Take the pen, Clara. Sign the addendum, walk down the aisle, and keep your mouth shut.
Clara: I need a glass of water from the dressing restroom first. My throat is completely parched.
Victoria glanced at her gold Cartier wristwatch with an impatient scoff.
Victoria: You have exactly two minutes, Clara. Julian, stand by the outer door so she doesn't ruin her makeup.
Clara pulled her arm free, slipped into the adjacent en-suite bathroom, and slid the brass deadbolt shut.
She turned on the brass faucet to drown out any noise, leaning against the cold stone sink with her heart hammering against her ribs.
Every word Julian spoke was ringing in her ears, sharper and more vicious than any open insult.
She reached into the inner lining of her silk gown, her trembling fingers wrapping around the small burner phone she kept for family emergencies.
She knew that once that bathroom door opened again, her life would either be permanently surrendered or fought for until the bitter end.
