The bright Texas sun poured into our Dallas home, making it seem like any other peaceful Saturday afternoon. I was standing near the kitchen counter finishing a glass of water when sudden, heavy footsteps rattled the wooden floorboards.
Lily: DADDY! IT'S BEHIND THERE!
My seven-year-old daughter ran frantic and pale into the living room, her small hands shaking violently as she pointed straight toward the massive wooden armoire cabinet resting against the back wall.
Marcus: Sweetie, slow down. What are you talking about? What's behind there?
Lily: The wall, Daddy! It made a terrible scraping noise! Something inside is moving!
My wife Sarah hurried out from the hallway, her satin maroon shirt catching the sunlight as her wide eyes darted between Lily and the dark wooden cabinet.
Sarah: Marcus, what is she talking about? What happened?
Marcus: I don't know yet, but look at her hands. She's hyperventilating. Get back for a second.
I stepped over to the armoire, placed both hands flat against the sturdy frame, and braced my feet against the floor. With a heavy groan, I pushed with all my weight. The dark cabinet dragged across the carpet, exposing the beige wall behind it.
Massive spiderweb cracks were spreading across the drywall. White plaster dust trickled down onto the baseboard like sand in an hourglass.
Sarah: MARCUS, STOP!
Marcus: Sarah, look at this drywall! There's a deep draft coming right through these cracks!
I ran out to the garage, grabbed my heavy steel sledgehammer, and marched back into the room. Sarah was standing in the doorway, her knuckles white as she gripped her arms.
Sarah: Please don't hit that wall! You have no idea what you're doing!
I didn't listen. I raised the sledgehammer and slammed it into the cracked drywall. Plaster exploded into clouds of dust, crumbling away to reveal a heavy, dark steel door concealed inside the wall cavity.
Marcus: WHY IS THERE A DOOR INSIDE OUR WALL?!
Sarah fell to her knees on the hard floor, sobbing as her voice cracked.
Sarah: YOU WERE NEVER SUPPOSED TO FIND IT... CALL 911 RIGHT NOW! 🇺🇸
Before I could pull my phone out, a heavy latch clicked inside the wall. A dirty, pale human hand slowly reached out from the dark shadow and gripped the metallic door handle firmly.
Sarah: NO! THEY'RE AWAKE!
I pulled Lily and Sarah behind my back, holding the sledgehammer high as the steel door began to turn from the inside.
