The Pale Hand in the Shadow

The Secret Steel Door Behind Our Living Room Wall

Marcus: Sarah, who is in there?! Who is behind that door?!

Sarah: Marcus, get Lily out of the house right now! Don't look at them!

Marcus: I am not leaving you here! Tell me what is going on!

The steel latch groaned as the metal handle slowly turned all the way down. The thick door swung outward by an inch, sending a blast of ice-cold, dusty air into our warm Texas living room.

Lily: Daddy, I'm scared! Somebody is talking in there!

Marcus: Go behind the sofa, Lily! Stay down!

Sarah: Please, Marcus, don't open it any further! You don't understand what my family did!

Marcus: Your family? What does your family have to do with a vault hidden in our living room wall?

A raspy, weak voice echoed from the darkness behind the heavy metal door, coughing through the rising plaster dust.

Voice inside: Sarah... is that you? Did he... did he break the seal?

I froze, my hands trembling around the cold fiberglass handle of the sledgehammer. The voice sounded human, but terribly frail and exhausted.

Marcus: Who are you?! Show yourself right now!

Sarah: Marcus, drop the hammer! Don't threaten him!

Marcus: You lied to me, Sarah! We bought this house three years ago! You told me it was a standard home purchase!

Sarah: I had to! If I told you the truth, they would have killed us all!

Marcus: Who is 'they'?! Who is hiding behind our drywall?!

The pale hand pushed the door further open. A tall, emaciated man with long, unkempt gray hair and sunken cheeks stepped into the dim light. He wore a dirty, faded jumpsuit and blinked painfully at the daylight streaming through our windows.

Unkempt Man: Sarah... you kept your promise... you brought food through the chute... but why is he breaking the wall?

Marcus: What food chute?! What promise?! Sarah, talk to me!

Sarah: Marcus... this is Julian. He's my biological brother.

Marcus: Your brother died ten years ago! You showed me his obituary! You showed me his gravestone in Houston!

Sarah: That gravestone is empty, Marcus! He never died!

I stepped back, my head spinning as I looked from my trembling wife to the weak, hollow-cheeked man standing in our living room.

Marcus: Why would you fake your own brother's death and lock him in a steel bunker behind our sofa?!

Julian: She didn't lock me in to punish me... she locked me in
