Ethan: You told me the latch was rusted shut two months ago.
Beatrice: It was! The contractor said opening it could ruin the foundation!
Ethan: Step aside, Beatrice.
Beatrice: Ethan, stop! You are humiliating me in front of our stepdaughter!
Ethan ignored her completely, dropping to one knee beside the decorative brass grate. He jammed the master key into the heavy industrial padlock, feeling the tumblers snap open with a sharp, heavy click.
Beatrice: Ethan, please don't do this!
He yanked the iron bar free and hauled the thick wooden floor hatch upward. A cold, damp rush of moldy air billowed out from the darkness below, filling the pristine white foyer with the sickening stench of stale water and sweat.
Ethan: Victoria? Victoria, are you down there?
A weak, shivering voice echoed from the bottom of the narrow stone staircase.
Victoria: Ethan? Oh God... Ethan, please... help me...
Ethan froze, the blood completely draining from his face as he stared into the dark abyss.
Ethan: Dear God in heaven...
Clara: See, Daddy? I told you! She locked Mommy down there!
Clara pointed her small, trembling finger straight into Beatrice’s pale, sweat-glistening face.
Clara: She took Mommy's phone and threw her down the stairs!
Beatrice took two frantic steps backward toward the sweeping spiral staircase, her polished emerald dress rustling against the marble wall.
Beatrice: Ethan, please, she is lying! You don't understand the full picture!
Ethan: You told me she was in Arizona! You showed me daily text updates from her doctor!
Beatrice: She was unstable! She was threatening to take everything from you in the divorce settlement! I was only trying to protect your family legacy and the estate!
Ethan lunged down the first three steps of the cellar stairs, reaching into the darkness. Within seconds, he emerged holding Victoria in his arms. Her designer dress was torn and covered in grime, her bare feet were bruised and swollen, and her hollow, tear-stained face was shivering violently in the warm air.
Victoria: She came to the airport curb... with two men in dark coats... they drugged me, Ethan... they brought me right back here in the trunk of her car...
Ethan: Don't try to speak, sweetheart. I have you. You're safe now.
Victoria: She made me sign papers... she said if I didn't sign the trust fund transfers, she would starve Clara...
Ethan gently laid Victoria down onto the plush foyer settee, pulling his suit coat off and draping it over her shivering shoulders.
Clara: Mommy! You're alive!
Victoria: My sweet girl... my brave baby girl...
Ethan slowly stood up, turning to face Beatrice. The veins on his neck bulged against his collar, and his hands were clenched into tight, white-knuckled fists.
Beatrice: Ethan, please listen to reason! We built a partnership! Victoria was going to destroy everything you built at Vance Logistics! Her lawyers were going to take seventy percent of the company shares!
Ethan: You locked my wife in a dungeon under my own living room.
Beatrice: She's mentally sick, Ethan! Look at her! Who will a judge believe? An unhinged addict or your executive vice president who holds your power of attorney?
Ethan: You forged those papers.
Beatrice: Every document has a verified notary stamp! I own this house now, Ethan! Legally, you can't touch me!
Ethan took two long, deliberate strides across the marble floor until he stood barely inches from Beatrice’s trembling frame.
