Vanessa staggered back, clutching her face. Her eyes were wide with shock, her glossy lipstick smeared slightly across her lower lip.
Vanessa: Did you just hit me? Over a ruined wall?
Mark: You’ve been nervous ever since the contractors left three days ago, Vanessa. Why are you trembling?
Vanessa: I am not trembling! I’m furious! Your daughter is acting crazy, and you’re hitting your wife!
Lily: GRANDMOTHER IS IN THERE! 🇺🇸
Lily didn't wait. She raised the heavy yellow plastic bat and smashed it back into the hairline crack. The weak sheetrock caved in with a dull crunch, exposing a dark, hollow pocket between the double studs.
Mark: Stop, Lily, let me see.
Vanessa: Mark, don't look in there! It’s just insulation and old pipes! You’re being absurd!
Mark: Step back, Vanessa. Right now.
I dropped to my knees on the cold floor. The hole was only six inches wide, but a faint, cold draft hit my face. It carried a strange, heavy odor—dust, stale damp air, and something unmistakably metallic.
Mark: Hello? Is anyone in there?
A low, muffled groan vibrated from behind the darkness. It was weak, choked, but completely undeniable.
Lily: See? Grandmama!
Mark: Oh God... Mom?
Vanessa: Mark, please, listen to me! Don't do this!
I didn't answer her. I grabbed the edge of the broken drywall with my bare fingers and pulled with all my strength. The cheap drywall tore away in jagged chunks, falling onto the rug. Behind the sheetrock wasn't insulation. It was an old utility closet that had been sealed off from the rest of the house during the recent remodel.
Mark: Mom!
Sitting on a low wooden folding chair inside the cramped, windowless alcove was my mother, Eleanor. Heavy silver duct tape was wrapped tightly around her mouth and wrists. Her eyes were swollen, but as the light hit her face, tears cut clear tracks down her dusty cheeks.
Mark: Mom! Oh my God, Mom!
Vanessa: Mark, wait! I can explain!
Mark: Shut up! Don't move a single step, Vanessa!
I ripped the tape from my mother's hands, my fingers shaking violently as I tore away the binding on her wrists. Her hands were freezing, her skin pale and paper-thin.
Eleanor: Water... Mark... please...
Mark: I'm here, Mom. I'm right here. How did you get in here? Who did this to you?
Eleanor raised a trembling finger, pointing straight past my shoulder at Vanessa, who was slowly backing toward the front door.
Eleanor: She... she locked me in... she told the workers it was a sealed storage vault...
