The Mountain Boardwalk Trail

The Sheer Cliff and the Cold Truth

The morning sun beamed bright over the high national park trails. Mark laced up his hiking boots while sitting on the bench near the visitor station. The air smelled crisp with pine leaves and damp morning earth. Chloe stood a few feet away, adjusting her red windbreaker and checking her hair in her phone screen.

They had planned this trip to northern California for months. Mark wanted a quiet weekend away from the city after endless weeks of stress. He had spent months dealing with complex family estate paperwork after his late father passed away.

Chloe: Are you ready to head up the trail yet?

Mark: Yeah, I just needed a quick breather before the steep climb.

Chloe: The weather is perfect today, so we should get to the high lookout early.

Mark: You really love those high canyon views, don't you?

Chloe: I love the fresh air and taking great pictures for memories.

Mark smiled and stood up, slinging his heavy backpack over his shoulder. They walked onto the wooden forest boardwalk that wound around the steep canyon wall. Deep green pine trees stretched out across the massive valley below them.

The wooden planks creaked slightly under their boots as they walked further. Mark kept a firm grip on the sturdy wooden handrail along the inside wall. Chloe walked briskly ahead, looking out toward the vast, open horizon with excitement.

Chloe: Look how open everything is out there!

Mark: It is incredible, but stay on the wooden walkway, Chloe.

Chloe: Oh, don't be so cautious all the time, Mark.

Mark: I just don't like how steep that cliff drop looks.

Chloe: We are totally safe out here on the main trail.

Mark took a deep breath of the cold mountain breeze and followed her up the path. He had been feeling anxious lately about more than just height. His family estate was finally coming out of probate, and big choices were near.

Chloe had been deeply involved in every discussion about his inheritance money. She constantly asked about the final property settlement and the life insurance policy details. Mark loved her, but her sudden intense interest in his money made him uneasy.

Chloe: Did your bank lawyer call you back this morning about the trust fund?

Mark: No, he said the final paperwork will be signed on Monday.

Chloe: That means everything transfers into your main personal account next week?

Mark: Yes, every single asset from the estate settles then.

Chloe: That is such a massive relief for both of us, isn't it?

Mark: I suppose so, but I mostly just miss my dad.

Chloe patted his arm gently and pointed toward an open rocky clearing ahead. The wooden boardwalk ended where a high granite ledge overlooked the entire valley. Sunlight reflected brightly off the bare, smooth rock surface near the canyon edge.

Mark hesitated at the end of the wooden path, watching the drop. The sheer cliff fell away for hundreds of feet into dense green tree tops below. The breeze blew harder out in the open, whipping Chloe’s red hair across her face.

Chloe: Come on, let’s explore near the edge!

Mark: I think we should turn back toward the main park center now.

Chloe: We just got up here, don't ruin the fun!

Mark stepped slowly onto the smooth rock surface, keeping his eyes on his feet. Chloe walked right up near the sheer border without any fear at all.
