Mark stepped into the master suite, his leather briefcase slipping from his hand and crashing onto the hardwood floor. He froze in absolute horror. The room was bathed in bright white light, highlighting the pile of golden curls scattered around the chair.
Mark: What... what is going on here?
Maria: Look at what she did to your daughter, Mr. Sterling! Look at her!
Mark rushed across the room, his knees almost giving out as he saw his toddler's patchy, ruined head. Lily was shaking violently, clutching Maria’s collar with her small, weak fingers.
Mark: Lily... oh God, my sweet baby... what happened to you?
Vanessa: Mark, sweetie, calm down! It’s not what it looks like at all! She had lice! Yes, the nanny took her to the park and she caught head lice!
Maria: That is a complete lie! Look at the clippers! She did this because she was jealous of her mother's hair!
Vanessa: Shut up, you stupid maid! Mark, listen to me! I was only trying to protect our family before the big ceremony! We have three hundred guests coming to the estate!
Mark: Lice? You shaved half my two-year-old daughter's head without calling me? Without taking her to a pediatrician?
Vanessa: I was taking action like a real mother should! I am trying to fix this family!
Mark: You are not her mother! You will never be her mother!
Mark looked down at the vanity table, where the heavy silver electric clippers were sitting, still warm from use. A few strands of his late wife’s genetic legacy were stuck to the metal blades. His stomach churned with deep, uncontrollable rage.
Vanessa: Mark, please, you are overreacting. Hair grows back! We can buy her a cute little silk hat for the wedding photos!
Mark: You shaved her head like an animal because you couldn't stand looking at her... didn't you?
Vanessa: She was pulling focus from me! Everything has been about your late wife and this baby for two years! What about me?
Mark: You are sick.
Vanessa: I am your future wife! You signed the prenuptial agreement last week! You can't speak to me like this!
Mark: Watch me.
