Lawyer: The grand jury returned a full indictment this morning, David. Attempted first-degree murder, child abuse, forgery, and grand theft.
David: What about her accomplice, Mark?
Lawyer: Police arrested him at his apartment in downtown Chicago two hours ago. They found forged cashier's checks linked to your offshore business accounts.
David: Good. Make sure the divorce decree is finalized immediately under the clause of criminal misconduct.
Lawyer: She won't receive a single cent of your assets or your estate, David. The prenup and her criminal convictions completely strip her of any legal claims.
David: Thank you, Robert. I'm going back upstairs to check on Maya.
Three weeks had passed since that horrific afternoon. Maya was back home in her own bedroom, resting in a comfortable arm sling while her collarbone healed.
David: How's my favorite girl feeling today?
Maya: Much better, Daddy. My arm doesn't hurt as much when I sit up.
David: That's great news, sweetie. The doctor said you can take off the sling in two more weeks.
Maya: Is she ever coming back here?
David: No, Maya. Never again. She is locked away where she can never hurt anyone ever again.
Maya: Are we going to be okay, just the two of us?
David: We are going to be better than okay. We have our home, we have each other, and nobody is ever going to break our trust again.
Maya: I love you, Daddy.
David: I love you too, Maya. More than anything in this world.
David sat on the edge of the bed and pulled his daughter into a gentle, protective hug, looking out the window at the peaceful afternoon sun. The house was finally quiet, safe, and filled with the warmth of truth restored.
