The morning light streamed through the towering glass windows of the grand Dallas estate.
Mark walked through the front doors after a long flight back from his business meeting.
He carried a heavy leather briefcase in one hand and his car keys in the other.
The air inside the vast foyer felt unusually tense and cold despite the bright sun.
His young daughter was supposed to be playing upstairs in her safe nursery room.
Instead, a sudden sharp cry echoed from the top of the white marble staircase.
Mark dropped his heavy briefcase onto the polished floor and ran forward immediately.
He looked up just in time to see his faithful nanny, Elena, sliding on her knees.
She wrapped her arms tightly around his little girl at the base of the landing.
The infant sobbed loudly against Elena's grey uniform as the maid held her very close.
Elena: Shh, you are safe now, sweet little baby.
Mark rushed over and knelt down beside the crying infant with a terrified look.
Mark: Is she hurt, Elena?!
Elena: She is safe, sir, but she almost fell down the entire flight.
Mark felt his heart pounding violently inside his chest as he checked his child.
He held his baby's tiny hand and looked up toward the top balcony rail.
His bride, Victoria, stood up there in her glittering designer gold gown.
She adjusted her delicate diamond necklace with hands that were visibly trembling.
Mark: Victoria, how did the safety gate come open up there?!
Victoria: I have no idea, darling, it must have been an accident.
Elena: That is not true, Mr. Sterling, she unlatched it on purpose!
Victoria gasped dramatically and rested her hand against her lower chest in shock.
Victoria: How dare you accuse me of such an awful thing, you foolish maid!
Mark: Quiet, Victoria, let her speak right now!
Elena wiped a stray tear from her cheek and pointed up at the railing.
Elena: I was folding laundry in the hall when I watched her do it.
Elena: She intentionally unlatched the child gate while your daughter was crawling nearby.
Victoria: She is completely insane and trying to ruin our big wedding day!
Mark stood up slowly, his tall frame blocking the bright sunlight behind him.
He looked between his tearful nanny and the wealthy woman he planned to marry.
Mark: Elena has worked for my family for six years without a single lie.
Victoria: So you trust a simple house maid over your own wealthy fiancee?!
Mark: I trust the person who just saved my child's life today.
Victoria began descending the curved stairs, her heels clicking loudly on the marble.
Her face was flushed with anger as she approached Mark near the entrance hall.
Victoria: Think about your social status and our major corporate merging contract, Mark!
Mark: None of that money matters if my child is not safe here.
Victoria: I am going to be the mistress of this estate by this weekend!
Mark stepped forward and blocked her path before she reached the little girl.
Mark: You will never set foot in this house again after today.
