Liam hurried down the grand staircase into his private study, his shoes squeaking against the wet entrance tiles.
The heavy mahogany desk that once belonged to his father sat near the bay windows, its top center drawer pried open with a bronze letter opener.
Liam: She broke the lock. She actually forced my private drawer open.
Maya stood cautiously at the doorway of the study, rocking Sophia gently against her chest while the baby sucked on a blue pacifier.
Maya: I heard a sharp snapping sound from down here around four o'clock. When I came to look, she slammed the door in my face.
Liam: The original copy of Clara's last will is gone. The adoption records are missing too.
Maya: Adoption records? Sophia isn't...
Liam: Clara couldn't carry a child due to her heart condition. We used an anonymous surrogate and finalized the full legal adoption three weeks before Clara died.
Maya: Does Evelyn know that?
Liam: She was never supposed to know. My father's trust fund has a brutal legacy clause written thirty years ago.
Maya: What kind of clause, Mr. Vance?
Liam: If any heir passes away without biological descendants, their entire share of the commercial real estate reverts entirely to the surviving sibling.
Maya: Oh my God. She doesn't just want custody to raise Sophia... she wants to prove Sophia has no legal right to the inheritance!
Liam: If she proves Clara was never biologically related to Sophia, she can contest Sophia's position as primary beneficiary to Clara's eighty-million-dollar estate.
Maya: That's why she wanted you declared an unfit, grieving father. She wanted temporary guardianship so she could order a genetic registry test!
Liam: Exactly. And once that test comes back negative for Clara's DNA, Evelyn inherits every single square foot of the portfolio.
Maya: That is sickening. She harmed an innocent baby just to secure a fortune!
Liam: I need to call Jonathan Wright immediately. He was my father's senior estate attorney and the only man who understands the trust covenants.
Liam grabbed his desk phone, dialing the memorized ten digits with shaking fingers while pacing the Persian rug.
Liam: Jonathan? Pick up the phone, Jonathan, please.
Jonathan: Liam? It's almost six in the evening. Is everything alright with little Sophia?
Liam: Everything is falling apart. Evelyn just broke into my locked study and stole Clara's will and Sophia's adoption decree.
Jonathan: What did you say? Evelyn was at your house?
Liam: She physically abused Sophia this afternoon to manufacture evidence of neglect against my nanny!
Jonathan: Good Lord... Liam, tell me you didn't sign the guardianship authorization form she requested yesterday.
Liam: I didn't sign it! Maya caught her on video hurting Sophia and stopped me just in time.
Jonathan: Thank heaven. Listen to me very carefully, Liam. Evelyn's private attorney, Richard Sterling, filed an emergency petition in family court at four-thirty today.
Liam: An emergency petition for what?
Jonathan: For immediate temporary custody of Sophia, citing parental incapacitation and an unsafe domestic environment.
Liam: On what grounds? I haven't missed a single day of providing for my daughter!
Jonathan: Evelyn submitted medical affidavits claiming you've been abusing prescription sedatives and leaving the child with unlicensed strangers.
Liam: Those are vicious lies! I haven't taken a sleeping pill in six months!
Jonathan: The judge scheduled an emergency preliminary hearing for tomorrow morning at nine o'clock sharp.
Liam: Can she actually take my daughter away from me?
Jonathan: If Sterling presents those fabricated medical records without an aggressive defense, the judge will issue an interim protective order granting Evelyn custody pending a full trial.
Liam: That will kill Sophia. Evelyn will lock her away in boarding facilities the second she controls the trust.
Jonathan: Bring the video footage directly to my downtown office tonight. And Liam... bring your nanny. Her eyewitness testimony is the only shield standing between you and prison.
