The fire in the hearth crackled warmly as silence settled over the small living room. Sarah pulled out her mother's silver locket and held it open.
Sarah: Inside this locket is a tiny picture of a mountain valley peak.
Thomas: Let me see that picture, please.
Sarah handed the open locket to Thomas. The old man’s weathered hand trembled as he held the tiny silver piece up to the lamp light.
Thomas: This is the cliff view right outside my front porch door.
Mark: She didn't send us on this trail by accident, did she Sarah?
Sarah: She left a note in her final will and testament giving me these coordinates.
Thomas looked up from the locket, tears welling in his bright blue eyes. He smiled softly for the first time since they had met on the trail.
Thomas: She wanted you to find your way back to your family roots.
Sarah: There is a clause in her estate papers that I never fully understood.
Mark: The lawyer said there was a co-beneficiary listed for the cabin property.
Sarah: It lists a Thomas Vance as the rightful owner of this mountain land.
Thomas stared at Sarah in complete shock, pulling a small folded paper from his shirt pocket. He handed it across the table to her.
Thomas: Her probate lawyer sent me this official letter six months ago after her passing.
Sarah: She left the entire mountain estate trust fund under your name permanently.
Thomas: I never wanted her family wealth or her money. I only wanted her happiness.
Sarah: You saved her memory, and today you saved my life on that dangerous trail.
Sarah stepped forward and threw her arms around the old man's shoulders in a warm, tight hug. Thomas held her gently, wiping a tear from his cheek.
Thomas: You are so much like her, Sarah. So strong and brave.
Mark: The fog outside looks like it is starting to finally clear up now.
Thomas: The mountain storms never stay long once the morning sun breaks through.
Sarah: I want to learn everything about her life here with you on this mountain.
Thomas: I have forty years of stories to tell you, my dear child.
Outside the cabin window, the silver American SUV park patrol vehicle rolled down the curving paved mountain highway in the bright morning sunlight.
Mark: Looks like the park rangers are clearing the main highway road now.
Sarah: We don't need to hurry back down to the city just yet, Mark.
Thomas: You are welcome to stay here as long as you like, Sarah.
Sarah: Thank you, Thomas. I think I finally found where I belong.
They sat together by the warm hearth as the morning sun flooded the room, illuminating the old framed photographs on the table in brilliant golden light.
