Water dripped continuously from Maria’s drenched maid uniform as she clutched my trembling daughter against her chest, her breathing ragged and frantic. Across the sparkling blue water, Evelyn didn't even flinch. She adjusted her sunglasses, her manicured fingers resting lazily on the rim of her iced crystal glass as if nothing extraordinary had just occurred.
Sarah: (Screaming at the top of my lungs, voice cracking with horror) Evelyn! Are you insane?! What have you done to my baby?!
Evelyn: (Sipping her drink slowly, tone dripping with condescension) Keep your voice down, Sarah. Screaming like a fishwife doesn't suit someone living in my son's house.
Sarah: You literally dropped my daughter into the deep end of this pool! I saw you! Maria saw you! I am calling 911 right this second!
Evelyn: Go ahead, call them. Tell the police your clumsy maid tripped and dropped the infant while you were busy hiding inside your office playing accountant. See who the authorities believe.
Maria gasped, her eyes widening in sheer disbelief at the sheer audacity of Evelyn’s brazen lie. The betrayal hung heavy in the humid Texas air, thick and suffocating.
Maria: That is a despicable lie, Mrs. Vance! I was inside cleaning the kitchen, and I saw you walk right up to the edge with the baby and let her go!
Evelyn: (Turning her back coldly) Watch your tone, girl. You are an employee in this mansion, and perjury is a serious felony in the state of Texas. Now take that dripping child inside before she catches a chill and ruins my clean floors.
Sarah: (Stepping forward, fists clenched so tight my knuckles turned bone white) You will never step foot near my daughter again. When my husband gets home from the boardroom, your reign of terror in this family is officially over.
Evelyn: (Laughing softly, a chilling sound) David listens to me, Sarah. He always has. That trust fund and this estate are tied to my approval, and neither of you will survive without my signature.
I scooped Lily into my own arms, feeling her little heart hammering frantically against my chest. The warmth of her tiny body contrasted sharply with the freezing terror gripping my spine. Evelyn turned on her heel and glided toward the grand double doors of the mansion, utterly unfazed by the devastation she had just unleashed.
Maria: (Whispering tearfully, touching my arm) Mrs. Sarah, we need security footage. That camera right above the patio cabana records everything twenty-four hours a day.
Sarah: (Nodding fiercely, wiping a tear from my cheek) You're right, Maria. She thinks her money and social standing place her above the law. She just made the biggest mistake of her life.
We rushed back inside, away from the glittering pool and the scattered red rose petals that now looked less like romance and more like a crime scene. Every footstep on the marble floor echoed with a renewed determination to strip Evelyn of every ounce of power she held over our lives.
