The grand foyer of our Dallas residence felt like a courtroom as I cradled a now-sleeping Lily upstairs, changing her into dry clothes while Maria stood guard at the bedroom door. Downstairs, the heavy oak front door swung open with a loud bang, announcing David’s arrival from his corporate meetings downtown.
David: (Calling out loudly from the foyer) Sarah? Maria? Why is there a police cruiser pulling into the driveway?! What is going on here?
I descended the sweeping staircase slowly, my face hardened into a mask of pure fury. Behind David, two Dallas police officers stepped into the grand foyer, their boots clicking sharply against the polished marble.
Sarah: (Voice shaking with suppressed rage) Your mother tried to drown our daughter in the pool, David. That’s why the police are here.
David: (Stumbling backward, dropping his briefcase onto the floor) Drown... Lily? Sarah, are you out of your mind? My mother would never do anything like that!
Evelyn: (Emerging gracefully from the study, dabbing her eyes with a silk handkerchief) I told you, David, the poor girl is under immense postpartum stress. She left the baby unattended by the edge while managing her mortgage paperwork, and the maid panicked and tried to blame me.
Sarah: (Stepping down to the last step, pointing a shaking finger) You lying, manipulative monster! You stood right there by the red rose petals and dropped her in!
Officer Martinez: (Stepping forward, holding a notepad) Ma'am, let's calm down. We received a direct emergency call from this residence regarding an attempted drowning. We need to hear statements from everyone involved.
David: Officer, there must be a terrible mistake. My mother controls the family trust fund and our estate holdings; she has lived here for decades. She adores her granddaughter.
Sarah: She doesn't adore anyone except her own control! Ask Maria! Maria saw the whole thing from the lawn!
Maria: (Stepping out from the hallway, voice steady and resolute) Officer, I am willing to swear under oath. Mrs. Vance walked over to the deep end, held the baby over the water, and let go. I had to dive in to save her life.
Evelyn: (Scoffing loudly, crossing her arms) A disgruntled employee trying to save her job after a tragic accident of her own making. How predictable.
David: (Looking back and forth between us, completely torn and overwhelmed) Maria, are you absolutely certain? Mother, please tell me this isn't true...
Evelyn: David, do you really believe your own mother would harm her flesh and blood? Or do you believe a hired maid and an hysterical wife trying to orchestrate a divorce settlement?
The tension in the foyer reached a boiling point. David looked at me with doubt flickering in his eyes—the exact doubt Evelyn had planted like poison over five years of marriage. The custody of my daughter and our entire future hung in the balance of a single security file.
