The Hidden Room Above

When Police Knocked on the Door, the Voice Inside Said What No One Expected

Arthur Vance: That bird is a mindless animal! It squawks random gibberish it heard on movies! You can't use a bird as probable cause!

Officer Clara: We didn't enter the house because of the bird, Arthur. We entered because of a domestic disturbance call triggered by your screaming argument inside this house twenty minutes ago.

Arthur Vance: I was having a private conversation on the phone! That gives you no legal right to raid my private quarters!

Officer Sarah: Step away from the hidden door, sir. Put your hands behind your back. You're being detained while we secure the scene.

Clara stepped past the handcuffed suspect and shined her tactical flashlight through the open bookshelf doorway. A narrow flight of wooden stairs led up into a fully furnished attic apartment, equipped with high-end monitors, safes, and stacks of financial documents.

Officer Clara: Look at this setup, Sarah. Air conditioning, satellite internet, luxury furniture... he's been living inside the hidden attic of his own house for years.

Officer Sarah: Why would a man fake his own disappearance, stay hidden in an attic, and let his wife take the fall?

Arthur Vance: Keep your hands off my private papers! I have lawyers who will destroy both of your careers before nightfall!

Officer Clara: Save it for the detective, Arthur. Let's see what's inside these open lockboxes on the table.

Clara walked over to the primary desk in the hidden attic room. Dozens of bearer bonds, stacks of banded cash, and passports with different aliases were neatly organized next to a framed photograph. Clara picked up the photograph and felt her stomach churn.

Officer Clara: Sarah... look at this picture. It's Arthur Vance and his wife, Eleanor. But look at the date stamp on the bottom right corner.

Officer Sarah: October 2024? That was only two years ago! Eleanor didn't move to Europe alone... she was helping him run this entire insurance fraud scheme!

Arthur Vance: You don't understand the full picture! You have no idea what she made me do!

Officer Clara: Where is Eleanor right now, Arthur? Because the distress call we got reported a woman screaming for help in this house!

Arthur Vance: She isn't here! She left for the airport an hour ago! We had a fight... she took her half of the wire transfer and left me with nothing!

Parrot: DON'T TOUCH ME, ARTHUR! LEAVE ME ALONE!

Officer Sarah: The bird isn't mimicking a fight from six years ago, Clara. It's repeating the fight Arthur had with Eleanor just thirty minutes before we arrived on this porch!
