The polished white marble of the Dallas cathedral reflected hundreds of glowing candles, but the sudden bang of the heavy oak doors shattered the entire ceremony.
A ten-year-old boy stood in the center aisle, shivering in oversized, dust-covered clothes.
Boy: Stop the wedding! She is lying about everything!
Whispers erupted across the pews as wealthy guests turned their heads in disbelief.
Vanessa: What is that disgusting creature doing here?
Julian: Wait, Vanessa, let him speak.
Vanessa: Let him speak? On our wedding day? Security, throw him out into the street right now!
The bride marched down the altar steps, her silk train trailing across the cold stone floor.
Boy: Don't marry her, mister! She paid people to keep me locked away!
Vanessa: Shut your mouth, you filthy orphan!
With a furious hiss, Vanessa swung her hand and struck the boy across the cheek, sending him crashing onto the slick marble.
Julian: Vanessa, stop! What the hell are you doing?!
Julian broke away from the priest and dropped to his knees, his tuxedo sleeve brushing the ground as he gathered the sobbing child into his arms.
Boy: Please, mister... look at this. She told them to throw it in the river, but I kept it hidden under my mattress.
The boy’s small, scraped fingers opened to reveal a tarnished, heavy gold locket engraved with a soaring falcon crest.
Julian froze, all color draining from his face as his breath caught in his throat.
Julian: Where did you get this? Tell me right now.
Boy: A woman gave it to me five years ago before they took her away in an ambulance. She told me never to take it off.
Julian: That woman... was my wife, Claire.
Vanessa: Julian, he’s a con artist! He stole it from the estate! Look at him!
Boy: I didn't steal it! My name is Leo... and you're my dad.
Julian stared into the boy's hazel eyes, noticing the exact crescent-shaped scar above his left eyebrow—the mark of a tragedy he thought had buried his entire family forever.
