The church emptied within minutes as embarrassed guests hurried to their vehicles, avoiding the flashing lights of news vans gathering at the perimeter.
Julian sat on the altar steps, his bow tie undone, holding Leo against his chest while an EMT cleaned the boy's scratched knee.
Paramedic: Aside from mild malnutrition and minor bruising, he's remarkably resilient, Mr. Sterling.
Julian: Thank you. We're heading straight to Dallas Children's Hospital for a full evaluation anyway.
Leo: Dad? Can we get a hamburger first? The real kind with melted cheese?
Julian let out a ragged, tearful laugh, pressing a kiss onto the boy's matted brown hair.
Julian: We can get fifty hamburgers, buddy. Anything you want, for the rest of your life.
Marcus approached the steps holding a tablet, his expression grave but resolved.
Marcus: State troopers just raided Henderson’s cabin in the pine woods. They found the original safe containing Claire’s journals, Leo’s medical records, and audio recordings of Vanessa instructing him to keep the boy sedated during holidays.
Julian: Make sure the prosecutors charge her with every single felony on the books. First-degree kidnapping, attempted murder, grand larceny, conspiracy.
Marcus: The district attorney said she won't even be eligible for bail given the flight risk and financial resources.
Julian: Good. Let her spend the rest of her days behind iron bars where she belongs.
Leo looked down at the gold locket resting in his small hand.
Leo: Does Mom have a real grave now?
Julian: Tomorrow morning, we're going to put her real name on the headstone, together. She would be so proud of you, Leo. You saved both of us today.
Leo: I wasn't scared, Dad. Because Mom told me in my dreams that you were waiting for me.
Julian stood up, took Leo’s small hand firmly in his own, and walked past the discarded bridal bouquet on the church floor, stepping out into the bright, warm Texas sunshine as father and son for the first time in five long years.
