The Paper in the Box

A Bride Packed My Little Girl Away Before Our Wedding Day

Marcus stood up to his full height, his dark eyes locked on the woman he had intended to marry tomorrow morning.

Marcus: Go on. Walk over there and read it aloud.

Evelyn: I... I didn't write those shipping labels. The moving agency did.

Marcus: You hired private couriers using my corporate card three days ago.

Evelyn: I was coordinating deliveries for the floral arrangements from Austin!

Marcus: Don't lie to me. My head of security called my cell phone twenty minutes ago.

Evelyn: Frank has always hated me! He's just an old security guard trying to cause drama!

Marcus: Frank pulled the transport manifest from your van parked behind the guest house.

Evelyn stepped back, her bridal train bunching awkwardly between her feet.

Evelyn: It's a boarding facility in Maine, Marcus! A world-class private school for girls!

Marcus: You told my daughter she was going to an orphanage.

Evelyn: I was disciplining her! She was being completely unruly!

Marcus: You don't discipline my child by threatening to discard her like trash!

Marcus ripped open the top flap of the nearest cardboard box with one violent pull.

Marcus: What is my late wife's diamond necklace doing inside your cosmetic bag?

Evelyn: Sarah's jewelry was supposed to be cataloged for the estate insurance policy!

Marcus: Sarah left that heirloom specifically in Claire's legal trust fund.

Evelyn: A seven-year-old cannot manage fine diamonds! It makes zero financial sense!

Marcus: You aren't her trustee, Evelyn. And you never will be.

Evelyn: I am going to be her stepmother by noon tomorrow!

Marcus: Tomorrow is canceled.

Evelyn: You cannot cancel a high-profile wedding with eight hundred guests arriving!

Marcus: Watch me.

Evelyn: My family's reputation will be ruined in Dallas society! The press will tear us apart!

Marcus: Your family's reputation was built on counterfeit bank collateral, wasn't it?

Evelyn froze, her hand flying to her throat as her crystal necklace rattled.

Evelyn: Who... who told you that?

Marcus: You thought I signed the prenuptial agreement without my forensic auditors checking your offshore accounts?

Evelyn: Marcus, please, my father made terrible investments during the crash!

Marcus: Your father embezzled millions from a state pension fund.

Evelyn: We needed a family settlement to keep him out of court! That has nothing to do with us!

Marcus: You didn't fall in love with me, Evelyn. You hunted down a widower with an open estate.

Evelyn: I loved you! I cared for this house!

Marcus: You cared for my bank accounts, and you tried to erase my daughter before the ink dried.

Evelyn lunged forward, grabbing Marcus's forearm with manic force.

Evelyn: Listen to me! We can still walk down that aisle! Nobody has to know about the boxes!

Marcus tore his arm away from her grip with a sharp snap of his elbow, sending her stumbling back against the wall.
