The Law Comes to Texas

A Bride Packed My Little Girl Away Before Our Wedding Day

Two marked county sheriff cruisers and an unmarked black SUV pulled up to the circular driveway, their red and blue strobe lights splashing violently through the arched glass windows.

Evelyn: Who called the police? Marcus, did you call the cops on me?

Marcus: The county sheriff is already serving your father's arrest warrant in Houston.

Evelyn: My father? What did my father do?

Marcus: Wire fraud. Grand larceny. And attempting to liquidate stolen securities across state lines.

Evelyn: No... no, that's impossible! Those bonds were clean!

Marcus: You forged Sarah's estate signatures on the bearer bond certificates yesterday afternoon.

Two uniformed deputies entered the grand foyer, their hands resting on their utility belts.

Deputy Harris: Mr. Vance? We have the federal warrant signed by Judge Miller.

Marcus: She's right there, Deputy.

Evelyn: Get your hands off me! Do you know how much this Vera Wang wedding dress costs?

Deputy Harris: Turn around and place your hands behind your back, ma'am.

Evelyn: Marcus, tell them to stop! You're making a catastrophic mistake!

Marcus: The only mistake I made was letting a viper sleep under the same roof as my child.

Claire: Daddy, is the bad lady leaving?

Marcus: Yes, baby. She is never coming back.

The metal cuffs clicked shut around Evelyn's wrists with a harsh, final snap.

Evelyn: I will sue you for every dollar in your bank accounts! I'll take your mansion, Marcus!

Marcus: You couldn't even pay the property taxes on the carriage house without my credit card.

Deputy Harris: Watch your step, ma'am. Let's move down the stairs.

Evelyn: Marcus! Please! I loved you! We had plans to travel to Paris next month!

Marcus: You had plans to collect a life insurance payout after putting Claire in foster care.

Evelyn's heel caught on the edge of the doorway, and she dropped down hard on her knees onto the outdoor threshold.

Evelyn: You ruined my entire life! You humiliated me in front of all of Texas!

Marcus stood tall and imposing in the massive arched entryway, framed by the Texas evening sun and the American flag flying from the estate courtyard.

Marcus: Never step foot in Texas again!

The deputies hauled Evelyn up by her arms, her designer white dress dragging through dust and dead leaves as they marched her to the patrol car.

The car doors slammed shut, cutting off her screeching cries as the red brake lights vanished down the private road.
