The morning sun was shining brightly over the quiet suburban neighborhood of Oak Creek.
David Miller was working in the front yard while his ten-year-old daughter Maya played near the greenhouse.
It was a peaceful Saturday, exactly the kind of day the family always enjoyed together.
Sarah was inside the kitchen preparing lunch for everyone while the house remained completely calm.
Suddenly, a loud yell from the backyard shattered the quiet atmosphere of the morning.
Maya came running out of the glass greenhouse with her face pale and her eyes wide with shock.
Maya: Dad, you need to come right now!
David dropped his garden tools on the grass and hurried toward his young daughter.
David: What happened, Maya? Did you hurt yourself?
Maya: No, Dad! There is a hatch in the floor under the flower boxes!
David followed Maya into the warm, sunlit greenhouse in the back corner of the yard.
The sun streamed through the glass panels, illuminating tiny dust motes floating in the air.
Maya pointed to a heavy wooden frame that sat directly on the concrete foundation.
David frowned in confusion because he had built that frame himself two years ago.
He pulled the heavy wooden box aside and noticed a rusted iron latch hidden beneath it.
Sarah: What are you two doing in here?
Sarah stood in the entrance of the greenhouse, holding a tray of fresh lemonade.
Her voice sounded normal, but her face grew pale when she saw the open hatch area.
David: Sarah, why is there a cellar door under the potting bench?
Sarah: That is just an old storage pit from the previous owners of the house.
She walked forward quickly, trying to place herself between David and the iron handle.
Sarah: It isn't safe, David. We should leave it covered up for now.
David looked closely at his wife and noticed her hands were trembling slightly.
He reached down and grabbed the heavy iron ring with both of his hands.
With a loud creaking sound, the wooden hatch lifted open to reveal a dark hole below.
A cold draft of damp air blew up from the darkness into the bright room.
Grandmother: Help me! Save me! Somebody please help!
David froze in absolute shock as he recognized the weak voice coming from below.
David: Mom? Is that really you down there?
He dropped to his knees on the hard floor and looked down into the dark pit.
An elderly woman was reaching her pale hands upward into the sunlight desperately.
