Mark pulled his blue sedan into the concrete driveway of his suburban home.
The afternoon sun was shining brightly across the manicured green lawn.
He had finished his corporate budget meeting earlier than he had originally expected.
Mark smiled as he grabbed his leather briefcase from the passenger seat.
He was looking forward to surprising his young daughter Lily after school.
His new wife Sarah had promised to take good care of her.
Mark stepped up to the front porch and unlocked the heavy wooden door.
The house was completely quiet as he stepped into the broad entry hallway.
He set his car keys on the small hallway table near the mirror.
Suddenly, he heard sharp raised voices coming from the formal dining room.
Mark stopped moving and listened carefully to the sound of the harsh voice.
It was Sarah, and her voice sounded cold and very angry.
He walked quickly down the hardwood hallway toward the dining room entrance.
The white interior double doors were slightly standing open in the bright light.
Mark pushed the right door open and stepped directly into the room.
His heart immediately stopped when he saw what was happening inside.
Sarah was standing over eight-year-old Lily with a silver spoon extended forward.
Lily was sitting in her wooden chair with tears streaming down her face.
The young girl was shaking and frantically turning her head far away.
Mark stepped quickly between his crying daughter and his rigid stepwife.
Mark: What is going on in this house right now?
Sarah: She is refusing to eat her dinner like a normal child!
Lily: Daddy, please, it makes my throat burn so bad!
Mark: Lower that spoon right now and step away from her!
Sarah glared at him but slowly pulled the metal spoon back.
Mark knelt down on the hardwood floor right beside Lily's small chair.
He wrapped his strong arms gently around his trembling little girl.
Lily buried her wet face straight into his clean navy suit jacket.
Mark felt her tiny chest shaking uncontrollably against his broad chest.
He looked up at the polished dining table to see the plate.
A small piece of seasoned chicken sat on the white ceramic dish.
Mark noticed a strange heavy layer of red powder covering the meat.
He knew that Lily had a severe physical reaction to spicy peppers.
Sarah knew about this medical condition from the very first month together.
Mark stood up slowly and faced his angry wife with cold eyes.
Mark: You know she cannot digest hot peppers without severe pain!
Sarah: She needs to stop being so picky about her food!
Mark: This is not about picky eating, it is her health!
Sarah: You spoil her too much and she is manipulating you!
Mark grabbed the silver spoon straight out of Sarah's tight hand.
He tossed it onto the dark dining table with a sharp clatter.
Lily sobbed softly as she clutched her father's hand very tightly.
Mark picked his small daughter up carefully into his secure arms.
He carried her away from the table toward the comfortable living room.
Sarah followed right behind them with her arms folded across her chest.
Her face was red with anger as she snapped at her husband.
Mark set Lily gently down on the soft fabric sofa nearby.
He reached into his pocket and pulled out his mobile telephone.
Mark: I am calling Dr. Evans right now to get help.
Sarah: You are wasting his time over a tiny piece of chicken!
Mark: Keep quiet while I talk to our family doctor, Sarah.
Mark dialed the clinic number with quick firm taps on the screen.
He held the phone to his ear while watching Sarah closely.
The situation in his home had finally reached a dangerous point.
