When the front door closed, Mark walked back to the living room couch and sat down beside Lily. He gently pulled her small frame into his lap, wiping away the remaining tear tracks on her cheeks.
Lily: Is the mean lady gone, Daddy?
Mark: Yes, sweetie. She's gone, and she's never coming back.
Lily: She said I was bad because I missed Mommy...
Mark: You are never bad for missing your mommy, Lily. Mommy loved you more than anything in the world, and so do I. What happened today was not your fault.
Lily: Promise you won't let anyone hurt me again?
Mark: I promise you on my life. From now on, it's just you and me. I'm taking time off from the firm. No more late meetings, no more leaving you with people who don't care about you.
Lily: Really? You're gonna stay home with me?
Mark: Every single day. We're going to build legos, go to the park, and eat all the ice cream you want tonight.
Lily wrapped her small arms tightly around her father's neck, resting her head against his shoulder with a deep, peaceful sigh. The fear that had gripped her small body for months finally melted away in the warmth of her father's embrace.
Mark: I love you, Lily bug.
Lily: I love you too, Daddy.
Mark looked out the window as the sun began to set over Oak Street. The house was quiet again, but for the first time in years, it felt like a real home—safe, secure, and filled with love.
