Shaun pulled his sedan into the quiet driveway of his suburban Ohio home.
The evening air was crisp and cold as winter settled over the neighborhood.
He carried his heavy leather briefcase up the front porch steps with a smile.
His week-long business trip in Chicago had finished two days earlier than expected.
He wanted to surprise his wife Sarah with a quiet dinner at home.
He unlocked the front door and stepped into the warm entryway.
The house was completely silent except for the faint hum of the furnace.
He dropped his key ring onto the small wooden table beside the wall decor.
"Sarah?" he called out, setting his coat on the closet hanger.
No one answered his call from the main floor or upstairs bedrooms.
He walked toward the kitchen to check if she had left a note.
As he passed the hallway, he noticed the basement door was slightly open.
A faint yellow light poured out from the crack onto the hallway runner.
Shaun frowned because they rarely used the basement during the cold winter months.
He walked over and pushed the thick wooden door fully open.
A soft weeping noise echoed up the narrow stone stairwell.
Shaun froze as his heart began to beat faster inside his chest.
The sound was distinctly human and filled with absolute desperation.
He slowly placed his hand on the wooden handrail and stepped down.
The heavy footsteps of his leather boots echoed against the concrete walls.
With every step he took, the faint crying sound grew louder and clearer.
He reached the bottom landing and turned the corner toward the storage utility area.
His breath caught in his throat as his eyes adjusted to the room.
In the far corner stood a large iron enclosure wrapped in a thick chain.
Sitting on the cold floor inside the cage were two elderly people.
Shaun gasped as he recognized the faded blue sweaters they were wearing.
It was his father Arthur and his mother Eleanor sitting side by side.
"Shaun... you came home!" his mother sobbed, reaching her arms through the bars.
Shaun rushed forward and dropped straight to his knees on the cold concrete.
"Why are you down here?" Shaun shouted, grabbing the heavy iron lock.
His hands shook violently as he tried to pull the rusted heavy chains apart.
His father lifted his pale face with tears streaming down his dry cheekbones.
"She locked us in here four days ago," Arthur whispered weakly.
Shaun's blood ran cold as the terrible truth began to settle inside him.
Sarah had told him his parents were taking a holiday vacation in Florida.
He heard the floorboards above him creak with sudden light movement.
Shaun turned around slowly and looked up toward the top of the stairs.
Sarah was standing right there at the top landing holding a black binder.
Her face was pale and her posture was stiff as she looked down.
"You told me they went away for Christmas!" Shaun roared in raw fury.
He stood up immediately from the basement floor and turned toward his wife.
