Shaun marched rapidly up the stone stairs toward the upper hallway floor.
Sarah took a quick step back as he reached the top landing step.
"Shaun, please just calm down and listen to me," Sarah stammered nervously.
"You locked my elderly parents in a cage!" Shaun yelled in utter horror.
"I did it for our family and our financial future!" Sarah screamed back.
She clutched the black leather binder tightly against her shaking chest.
Shaun snatched the heavy binder directly out of her pale trembling hands.
He flipped open the plastic cover to see what she was hiding.
Inside were official legal documents regarding his parents' real estate portfolio.
There was a power of attorney paper awaiting his father's forced signature.
There was also a transfer deed for his parents' million-dollar family trust fund.
"You were trying to steal their entire life savings!" Shaun said in disbelief.
"They were going to leave everything to a charity estate fund!" Sarah argued.
"That was their personal choice to make with their own hard-earned money!" Shaun shouted.
Sarah stepped closer and tried to grab his arm to calm him down.
"We have a mortgage and bills to pay every single month!" Sarah cried out.
"Get away from me!" Shaun yelled, pulling his body back from her reach.
Sarah stumbled back against the hallway wall, tears streaming down her eyes.
"Call 911 right now!" Sarah wept, pointing her finger at his cell phone.
"I am calling the police, but not for what you think," Shaun said cold-heartedly.
He stood over her with heavy breathing as his heart pounded with anger.
"Open that door now!" Shaun commanded, pointing down toward the dark stairs.
Sarah reached into her coat pocket with trembling hands and pulled out keys.
She dropped the heavy brass ring onto the hardwood floor with a clash.
Shaun scooped up the keys instantly and shoved past her without looking.
He hurried down the stairs to free his suffering parents from the cage.
His hands fumbled with the key ring as he tried every single key.
Finally, the iron lock clicked open and the heavy chain dropped down loud.
Shaun pulled the heavy cage door open and threw his arms around them.
Eleanor wept softly into her son's shoulder as Arthur held them tightly.
"I am so sorry I didn't realize sooner," Shaun whispered with deep regret.
"We knew you didn't know anything about this, son," Arthur said gently.
Shaun helped his fragile parents stand up from the hard cold floor.
He guided them slowly toward the stairs so they could finally escape.
Above them, the sound of the front door opening echoed down loudly.
Sarah was attempting to flee the house before the authorities arrived there.
