The Panic in the Hall

A Little Girl Touched My Brace and Saved My Life

Julian: What did she just touch?

Clara: I am so sorry, sir! Please forgive her!

The maid dropped to both knees, gathering the little girl into her arms and pulling her back against her chest.

Clara: SHE LOVES SHINY BUCKLES, SIR! She slipped away from the linen room while I was folding sheets! Daisy, say you are sorry right now!

Dr. Keller: Step back! Nobody touch the brace!

Dr. Adam Keller, Julian's personal orthopedic specialist who had accompanied him from the surgical clinic, rushed through the double glass doors, sliding onto one knee beside Julian's right leg.

Dr. Keller: Julian, hold completely still. Do not put any downward pressure on that foot.

Julian: Adam, what is that beeping? The battery indicator never makes that sound.

Dr. Keller: It's not the battery warning.

Dr. Keller pulled a mini inspection penlight from his coat pocket, illuminating the tiny gaps around the carbon-fiber hinge.

Daisy: The shiny part!

The little girl pointed her trembling finger toward the exposed panel, tears welling in her eyes.

Daisy: SOMEONE WAS MESSING WITH IT OUTSIDE!

The entire lobby fell into absolute silence. The front desk staff stopped typing, and two security guards stepped forward.

Julian: What did you just say, little girl?

Daisy: A man with black gloves... by the big black car. He had pointy scissors.

Julian stared down at the child, the blood draining from his face until his skin turned pale as chalk.

Julian: What car?

Daisy: Your shiny car! He was twisting wires under the leg thing when you were in the big chair!

Dr. Keller: Dear God in heaven...

Julian: Adam, talk to me. What are you looking at?

Dr. Keller: The micro-hydraulic valve. The emergency release she tapped didn't disconnect the motor. It bypassed a secondary pressure seal that shouldn't even be connected here.

Julian: Meaning what?

Dr. Keller: Meaning if you had stepped into your SUV and placed full weight on the brake pedal, the servo would have locked in reverse at three hundred pounds of torque. Your tibia would have shattered instantly, sending you into oncoming traffic.

Julian's fingers dug into the foam handles of his crutches so hard his knuckles turned white.

Julian: Someone tried to finish what the first crash started.

Clara: Sir, we didn't mean any trouble, please don't call the police on us!

Julian: Call the police? Clara, your daughter just saved my life.

Mark: Mr. Vance, what do you want security to do?

Julian: Lock down the entire parking pavilion. Nobody enters, nobody leaves. And bring my stepbrother down here right now.
