Sirens wailed in the hotel courtyard as state troopers escorted Carter Vance out in handcuffs, his expensive jacket draped over his wrists to hide the steel cuffs from reporters.
Inside the quiet lounge, Julian sat on the couch with a heavy ice pack resting against his bare knee. Dr. Keller packed away his medical equipment, shaking his head in disbelief.
Dr. Keller: If you had taken two steps down the concrete entry ramp, the hydraulic cylinder would have snapped the internal pins. You would have fallen forward down twenty stone steps.
Julian: And Carter would have inherited the whole estate as the next of kin.
Dr. Keller: He almost pulled it off.
Julian turned his gaze toward the corner of the room. Clara was kneeling beside Daisy, quietly tying the little girl's worn canvas shoes.
Julian: Clara.
Clara: Yes, Mr. Vance? We'll get out of your hair right now. I already told the manager I'll cover the rest of my shift.
Julian: You're not going back to cleaning rooms today. In fact, you're never cleaning another room in this building again.
Clara's eyes widened, tears instantly springing to the corners of her eyelids.
Clara: Please don't fire me, sir! I know Daisy shouldn't have been wandering the hallway, but I'm a single mother. I have two months left on my rent mortgage and if I lose this job, we'll lose our apartment!
Julian: Clara, look at me. I'm not firing you.
Clara paused, holding Daisy's hand against her chest.
Julian: How much do you make here an hour?
Clara: Sixteen dollars and fifty cents, sir.
Julian: Daisy, come here for a second.
The little girl walked over shyly, peeking at Julian's crutches.
Julian: Do you like shiny things, Daisy?
Daisy: I like gold stars and shiny buckles.
Julian: Well, you have the sharpest eyes in the entire city.
Julian reached over to the table and picked up his leather wallet. He pulled out his attorney's direct business card and handed it to Clara.
Julian: My estate firm manages over forty residential properties downtown. We need a full-time regional operations coordinator, starting Monday morning at ninety-five thousand a year with full medical coverage.
Clara gasped, dropping the card onto her lap as her hands flew up to cover her mouth.
Clara: What? Sir... I don't have a college degree. I don't know how to run properties.
Julian: You have something far rarer than a degree, Clara. You have honesty, courage, and a daughter who isn't afraid to speak up when something is wrong.
Clara: I... I don't know what to say. We've been living paycheck to paycheck for three years.
Julian: And there's one more thing.
Julian smiled warmly, his first real smile in months, looking down at little Daisy.
Julian: My legal team is establishing a fully paid college trust fund in Daisy's name tomorrow morning. Whatever school she wants to attend when she grows up, it's covered in full.
Clara fell to her knees beside the couch, weeping tears of pure relief as Daisy wrapped her tiny arms around her mother's neck.
Justice had caught up with the brother who traded family for greed, but for a hardworking mother and a curious little girl, an innocent touch of a button had just changed their entire world forever.
