The grand living room was filled with tense, suffocating silence as Arthur Vance plugged a flash drive into the large display above the fireplace.
The two custody agents stood quietly near the doorway, their clipboards lowered.
Agent Miller: Counsel, if this document changes custody status, we need to view it immediately.
Victoria: This is an invasion of my privacy! Charles, turn off that screen right now!
Charles: Sit down, Victoria. Or I will have the estate security hold you down.
The screen flickered to life, showing Julian Sterling sitting in a bright hospital room, his arm bandaged and his face worn with exhaustion.
Julian (on screen): "Charles, if you are watching this, it means I didn't survive the threats."
Charles gripped the edge of the fireplace mantel, his knuckles turning white as tears filled his eyes.
Charles: Julian... My god...
Julian (on screen): "Victoria discovered that Dad left sixty percent of the family business directly to my son, Leo."
Victoria began to back away toward the hallway entrance, but Arthur stepped firmly into her path.
Arthur Vance: Stay right there, Victoria. Local detectives are already waiting at the front gate.
Victoria: This video is completely staged! Anyone can use artificial intelligence to forge a recording!
Julian (on screen): "She offered me two million dollars to sign away Leo's inheritance and leave the country. When I refused, she threatened to make sure Leo never saw his first birthday."
Agent Miller turned his head sharply toward Victoria, his jaw dropping in disgust.
Agent Miller: Mrs. Sterling, did you offer a financial payoff for child abandonment?
Victoria: Don't you dare interrogate me! You work for child protective services, not the homicide bureau!
Julian (on screen): "I have handed all original corporate share certificates and the actual last will to Arthur Vance. Leo is the sole owner of the Sterling estate. Charles is his sole legal guardian."
The video ended, leaving the screen glowing in pure white light.
Charles turned slowly toward his wife, the heartbreak in his eyes transforming into cold, unyielding iron.
Charles: You tried to kill my nephew's future. And you let my brother die alone in a hospital bed.
Victoria: Julian was reckless, Charles! He was going to waste all that money on charitable nonsense!
Charles: It was his money! It was our family's heritage!
Victoria: We built this lifestyle together! I deserve half of everything in this house!
Arthur Vance: Actually, Victoria, according to the prenuptial agreement you signed five years ago, any act of fraud or felony conduct immediately invalidates all spousal claims.
Victoria's eyes darted wildly around the room like a trapped animal looking for an exit.
Victoria: The prenup? That prenup was heavily biased toward your family!
Charles: You signed it willingly before our wedding at the country club.
Victoria: You can't leave me with nothing! I gave you five years of my youth!
Clara: And you threw a sick three-week-old baby across a stone floor today without a second thought.
Clara walked down the grand stairs, holding little Leo securely wrapped in a fresh, warm blanket, accompanied by the family physician.
Dr. Evans: The child has mild bruising on his ribs from blunt impact, but he will recover with proper care.
Agent Miller: Dr. Evans, did you say blunt impact bruising?
Dr. Evans: Yes. Consistent with being thrown against a solid surface.
Agent Miller immediately pulled his radio from his belt, clicking the transmit button with sharp authority.
Agent Miller: Central dispatch, this is Unit Four. Send county sheriffs to the Sterling mansion immediately. We have confirmed felony child endangerment on scene.
