The Weight of Justice

A Mother Threw Her Own Baby Across The Polished Floor

Flashing red and blue lights illuminated the grand windows of the Sterling mansion as three county sheriff cruisers parked along the circular driveway.

Two uniformed deputies entered the foyer, their handcuffs jangling on their utility belts.

Deputy Walker: Who called in the child endangerment report?

Agent Miller: I did, Deputy. This woman, Victoria Sterling, threw a three-week-old infant across this hall earlier this afternoon.

Victoria: It was an accident! I tripped on my dress! You cannot arrest me on hearsay!

Charles: It wasn't an accident. And it isn't hearsay.

Charles pointed upward toward the ornate molding near the high ceiling.

Charles: When Julian began worrying about threats three months ago, I had discrete 4K security cameras installed in every main room of this estate.

Victoria froze, her face draining of every drop of blood.

Victoria: You... you put cameras in here?

Charles: Every single angle. The footage from twenty minutes ago is already backed up to the cloud and forwarded to the district attorney.

Victoria: Charles, please! Think of our family name! Think of the social scandal this will cause!

Charles: You didn't think of our family name when you treated a defenseless baby like garbage.

Deputy Walker stepped forward, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt.

Deputy Walker: Victoria Sterling, turn around and place your hands behind your back.

Victoria: Don't touch me! Do you know who my father is? He will have your badge by morning!

Deputy Walker: Ma'am, stop resisting or I will add obstruction to your charges.

With a sharp click, the cold steel cuffs locked around Victoria's slender wrists, pinning her hands behind the expensive teal fabric of her dress.

Victoria: Charles! Tell them to stop! You are my husband! You took a vow to protect me!

Charles: That vow ended the second you endangered this child's life.

The deputies escorted the weeping, screaming woman out through the heavy double doors, down the stone steps, and into the back of the waiting cruiser.

The heavy slam of the police car door echoed through the quiet estate grounds, followed by the low rumble of the engine pulling away.

Inside the grand foyer, the silence returned, thick and peaceful for the first time in months.

Charles walked over to Clara, his eyes soft as he looked down at the sleeping infant nestled in her arms.

Charles: Clara, I owe you everything. If you hadn't caught him...

Clara: I only did what any decent human being would do, Mr. Sterling.

Charles: You did far more than that. You stood up to a monster while risking your entire livelihood.

Arthur Vance: Charles, we will file the formal custody and adoption petition for you tomorrow morning at nine.

Charles: Thank you, Arthur. Make sure the divorce papers and the restraining order are served to her cell tonight.

Arthur Vance: Consider it done.

Charles turned back toward the young maid who was still gently swaying with the baby.

Charles: Clara, you are no longer a maid in this house.

Clara's face fell, fear flickering in her dark eyes for a brief second.

Clara: Sir? Are you letting me go?

Charles: Never. I am naming you the official head guardian and private nurse of the Sterling trust fund, with full salary, private quarters, and college tuition covered for your family.

Tears of pure relief spilled down Clara's cheeks as she pressed her forehead gently against the baby's blanket.

Clara: Thank you, Mr. Sterling. Thank you so much.

Charles: Julian would be proud knowing his son is surrounded by true love now.

Little Leo shifted quietly in the warm swaddle, letting out a soft sigh as the evening sunlight painted the marble floors in shades of pure gold.
