Mark reached into his suit pocket with one hand while holding his daughter firmly with the other. He pulled out his high-end smartphone and rapidly tapped the screen, dialing emergency services without a second of hesitation.
Victoria: Mark... what are you doing? Who are you calling?
Mark: I am calling the Texas State Police right now! You are going to jail for child abuse and endangerment!
Victoria: CALLING THE POLICE?! Are you crazy?! Do you have any idea what this will do to our reputation? The local newspapers, the country club, my family—everyone will be talking about us!
Mark: I don't give a damn about your country club reputation! You chained my daughter to a tree!
Voice on Phone: 911 Emergency, what is your location?
Mark: I need police officers at 742 Elmridge Drive immediately! My wife has physically abused and restrained my three-year-old daughter with a steel chain on our front lawn!
Victoria: NO! Mark, hang up that phone! Hang it up right now!
Victoria lunged forward, her long acrylic nails reaching out to grab the phone out of Mark's hand. But Sarah stepped swiftly into her path, blocking Victoria with her arm and shoving her backward onto the grass.
Sarah: Don't you dare touch him! Stay right where you are!
Victoria: You dirty little maid! I will make sure you starve in the streets for this!
Mark: Yes, operator, send an ambulance as well! The baby has severe red marks and bruising on her shoulders! Hurry!
Within less than four minutes, the distinct, sharp sound of police sirens began wailing in the distance, growing louder and louder as two patrol cars sped down the tree-lined suburban street. Red and blue lights flashed brightly against the front windows of the Vance estate as the police vehicles pulled up right behind Mark's SUV.
Officer Miller: Police! Nobody move! What happened here?
Mark: Officer, thank God you’re here! Look at my daughter, and look at that heavy steel chain resting right there on the grass!
Victoria: Officers, please! It’s a huge misunderstanding! I am Victoria Vance, my father sits on the city council! This is just a private family discipline matter!
Officer Miller: Quiet down, ma'am! Ma'am, do not move towards the child!
The lead police officer took one look at the heavy iron chain, the red marks on tiny Lily’s skin, and the visible terror on the child's face. He immediately unholstered his handcuffs, turning toward Victoria with a stern, uncompromising expression.
