FABLE

A New Beginning

Beyond the Hidden Wall

Leo: Can we go back to our old house, Daddy? The one near the lake where Mommy used to take me?

Victor: We can go anywhere you want, son. We are packing our bags tonight and leaving this mansion behind for good.

Nana: Mr. Victor, the police captain said they need you to sign some formal statements before they take the secondary evidence from the hallway.

Victor: I will handle it right away. Nana, please stay with Leo while I speak with the investigators outside.

Nana: Of course, sir. Take all the time you need.

Victor walked back out into the grand hallway where crime scene technicians were already taking photographs of the smashed wooden panel and the tiny hidden alcove. The lead detective approached Victor with a small yellow evidence bag holding Eleanor's fake medical documents found in the master bedroom safe.

Detective: Mr. Victor, we found forged death certificates, transfer deeds, and offshore bank accounts tied to your head accountant, Richard. We arrested him at his home ten minutes ago.

Victor: Make sure neither of them gets bail, Detective. They kept a child locked in a wall for months.

Detective: With this recording and the physical setup inside that wall, neither of them will see the outside of a federal prison for at least twenty years.

Victor: Good. Justice is finally being done.

An hour later, as the morning sun began to rise over the grand estate, Victor walked out of the front entrance holding Leo in his arms, with Nana walking beside them. The quiet morning air felt fresh and clean, free from the dark secrets that had filled the mansion for so long.

Leo: Look, Daddy, the sun is coming up!

Victor: It sure is, Leo. It's a brand new day for us.

Nana: Where are we heading first, Mr. Victor?

Victor: First, we are going to get Leo the biggest breakfast in town. And then, we are going home to start over properly.

Leo smiled, burying his face into his father's shoulder as Victor carried him toward the waiting car. The dark alcove behind the hidden wall was finally empty, and the true family was whole again.
