The Dallas heat hummed thick and heavy over the backyard pool, but inside the mansion, the air was ice-cold. Marcus satellite-tracked the clock on his bedside table, his fingers tracing the rubber wheels of his chair. Every evening at eight, the lawn lights flickered off, and the silence swallowed the estate whole. But tonight, the quiet was broken by the sharp, clicking heels of his wife, Victoria, marching across the travertine patio with a document folded tightly in her hands.
Victoria: You’re late taking your medicine, Marcus. Or are you just feeling stubborn tonight?
Marcus: I don't need the pills, Victoria. I need you to tell me why the family trust funds were transferred yesterday morning.
Victoria: Oh, don't start with your endless paranoia again. It was just a routine consolidation with our estate attorney.
Marcus: Without my signature? I built this company from a garage in Texas. You don't get to move ten million dollars without asking me!
Victoria: Look at yourself, Marcus! You can barely wheel yourself to the edge of the water without gasping for breath! You aren't capable of managing the estate anymore.
Marcus glared at her, his jaw set in a hard, rigid line, but as he wheeled closer to the edge, the slick tiles gave way under his right wheel. A cold sweat broke out across his forehead as he felt the heavy frame tip precariously toward the dark blue water below.
Elena: Mr. Marcus, wait! Don't move!
Elena, the young housemaid, burst through the glass patio doors, her hands still damp from scrubbing the kitchen counters. She sprinted toward the ledge, her eyes wide with sheer terror as she saw the wheelchair wobbling on the slick stone edge. Victoria didn't reach out; she simply stepped back, folding her arms over her designer dress with an icy gaze that made Elena's stomach drop. The heavy metallic frame tipped over, dragging Marcus straight into the deep end with a sudden, deafening splash. The dark water swallowed him instantly, the weight of the metal pulling him toward the bottom like an anchor.
Victoria: Stop right there, Elena! Don't you dare touch him!
Elena: He’s going to drown! Get out of my way!
Elena ignored the screaming heiress, took a deep breath, and plunged straight into the freezing pool, diving beneath the surface to break the trapped man free before his air ran out completely.
